Hi everyone. New to this website.
I am finally upgrading my home theater reciever and have 2 models I am considering, onkyo tx-nr747 or denon avr-x3100w.

I'm not buying new models unfortunately.

I only have two speakers currently but may add home theater later.

What I'm really wanting in bluetooth and wifi so I can stream music from my samsung phone and other devices, 4k and a great sound.

As I'm not someone who knows much about receivers I'm just looking for advice on what people think is the better choice.

Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

Let's start at the start

What do you currently have?

What do you hope to get out of this upgrade?

What is your budget?

The Denon won't handle HDCP 2.2 sources, so it's not as '4K compliant' as the Onkyo...

The Denon would be a better receiver for my money though, nicer GUI / remote etc.

I can't say much about either of their streaming capabilities, but if you hardwire them they should be 'okay'? If you're just using Spotify Connect both would be okay I would think.

Hi

Currently have Yamaha RX-V650. No HDMI inputs.

Mainly used for music through two Onkyo floorstaning speakers.

Also watch movies through it as paired with Wharfedale powercube 12 subwoofer.

I am wanting to run computer, DVD recorder and tv throigh hdmi inputs for ease of switching between them on one input on the tv.

Mostly though i am wanting it for music. Streaming stored music on android phone, spotify etc. So I'm guessing bluetooth and wifi will assist me there.

Budget is $700. I could push it to $1000 but it would have to be well worth it

Both of your choices are older models, for that budget you can probably get newer models that should be equivalent or better. If you are not in a rush wait for the ~$1000 models to go on sale.

I recently picked up a Onkyo tx-nr676e from Jb Hifi on boxing day for $697 and I am damn happy with it for that price. 7.2 or 5.1.2 for ATMOS, butt ton of features and connectability for the price, no complaints. Room correction is not great, but eh. I have it bi-amped with a pair of Kef q700s, and it sounds fantastic. If you could find it for under $1000, I would highly recommend it.

The Onkyo tx-nr686 seems to be the same thing, but with THX certification (?).

I was also looking at the Sony DTRN 1080 and Denon Avr-x1500h as comparative models which seem to review well (Denon is slightly down on WPC but has excellent room correction software apparently).

I also saw this guy in my travels for what it is worth but don't really know much about it. Seems to have a similar feature set as others for a pretty steep discount. Hopefully some Pioneer owners can chip in as to whether they are any good.

Hi,

In case you may be interested - I recently upgraded my AV receiver, so have an Onkyo HT-R693 for sale, in very good condition. As compared to the NR-747 the main difference would be lack of DTS-X, or HDR pass through. If you don't require those things (I do!), it's a very good 4k receiver. I'd be looking for $450 (plus shipping if outside Wellington).

More info:

PM me if you're interested and require more info.

Cheers.

FYI - Onkyo and Pioneer are now all but identical as they have the same parent company (Onkyo Pioneer Corp). Different front fascia, different name for the room EQ and sometimes THX cert (the most pointless of all certifications these days)... and that's about it.

Damn now that you mention it, it looks awfully similar to mine, even the remote is almost identical.

For $699 I feel like the Pioneer is good value for money. 4k, hdr10, dolby vision, spotify connect, bluetooth, the list goes on. And it comes with a warranty as well.

Thanks for the advice.

I did some research and ended up ordering the new model Onkyo TX-NR696 for $859. I started out looking for the 676e but couldnt get it cheaper than the new model, does anyone else find that weird??

Looking forward to collecting it this weekend.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

You ordered the 696? I didn't know the 686 had been replaced yet?

Sorry I meant 686. Must have hit 9 by accident.

Installed it yesterday and its everything I wanted. I love it.

Huh, don't know how I didn't register that the 686 was the newer model (2017 vs 2018). As you said, weird that it was priced lower than the 676. When I got my 676, the 686 was sitting at $1397, so not even close.

Works for you though, $859 is a great deal for it. Hell of a lot of features for the price, just hopefully they have ironed out some of the kinks that plagued Onkyo AVRs of an older vintage. Enjoy!
