Hi All,

I am slowly getting my head around the MediaPortal stuff, but am not able to get image quality on the TV that is equal to what I get of the Sky STB.  Just need some help to make sure on am on the right path.

So, I have split the dish feed in two, one goes to the STB, the other to an HVR-3000.
The 3000 is tuned and picks up all the encrypted and unencrypted channels (are these sky and Freeview Satelitte? This also confuses me).  The plan is to put the Jaycar card reader in and do away with the STB.  But while I test this, I still need the STB to keep the WAF high (its bad enough that I have to use the TV screen to set this up).

I digress... The TV is a 46inch Bravia X Series.  Graphics card is Nvidia 8600GTS (256mb). Vista 64bit runs nicely at 1080 on the TV.  When mediaportal is running in non fullscreen mode, the picture quality is amazing, but putting it full screen, the quality is not quite there.   Flicking betwen the PC and the STB images, quality difference is reasonably notiecable (well, I can notice it).

I have been playing around with ffdshow and have managed to increase the quality.  Is it just a matter of playing around with the config of ffdshow until I get it right, or am I way off track?  I have only just learnt about codecs etc so am totally new to this kind of thing.

Hopefully this is easily fixed and I would appreciate any tips that people have picked up while playing with this.

Thanks

First thing to do is potentially try something other than the FFDshow codec. Have you tried the Microsoft MPEG2 codec that comes with Vista?

How are you hooking your PC up to your TV? VGA or DVI/HDMI. What resolution are you using?

give up.

I had a similar setup and spent many many hours trying to get the picture to match a direct feed. it never will.

1. you are dropping the bitrate - I think MP uses 6 or maybe 8Mbs????
2. you are encoding and then decoding the image.

the best I ever got was using FFDSHOW raw video to upscale the image to 720p with various sharpening and denoise filters in operation. BUT you cant have this switched on with h.264 content or it breaks hardware decoding.

In the end once I moved to freeviewHD I found that it was such a big step down to watch Sky via MP that I got rid of Sky! I dont watch sport and didnt have movies either so no big loss really.

Hi,

I was using a default decoder that came with MP before ffdshow on.  Not sure if that was the Vista one you mentioned.

The PC to TV connection is DVI from the card to HDMI on the TV.  Will need to check on the resolution.  I think it was 1400 by something but will cconfirm.

I am told I am in a dodgey coverage area for Freeview.  I am waiting to have a aerial specialist come around to have that confirmed.  The picture quality is not terrible and I could live with it.  But it would be nice to be able to make it better if possible

Slow progress.

Looks like it is a patience game... Resolution is 1920x1080.
