I could import one from the UK (recommended by Ionic Industries), but it would be more convenient if there was one already in the country. We ordered a pre-unlocked player but the *****s at Panasonic sent one that was still locked, and the retailer tested it with a "region 2" DVD that was actually unlabelled region 2+4. Panasonic "support" is completely uninterested in fixing their mistake, and I'm not keen on paying for the return taxi trip to the nearest service agent.

I dont have one but if you can get your hands on a logitech remote control, that may be able to do it for you, or a Broadlink RM33 I have found to be very good on my Aircon, I have not tried on AV gear but I hear there are 100'000's of device codes.

This may be of use, using a harmony remote.

If it was from a NZ retailer, once upon a time it was a free on-request service and should have the blaster on hand at time of pickup (2+4s has been common for a while as some areas overlap).

But yes, using logitech learnable is entirely possible (before they're end of life). Done a few myself

i have managed to unlock dvd regions for 2 panasonic blu-ray players using a one-for-all remote (off the top of my head it's a model 7544, i can confirm tonight if necessary) using the following instructions:

Protocol:
Set up the DVD button on the Remote to control the player using code 0490.
The instructions on how to do this is in the Kameleon URC 9960 manual (i used  a one-for-all).

Then reprogram these advanced codes to the numeric keys.
1. press and hold SETUP for two blinks
2. press OTHER
3. enter 9-9-4
4. press the DEVICE key (=press DVD icon here)
5. press SETUP for one blink
6. enter advanced code
7. pick a key
8. redo step 2 through 7 for all the codes below.

    key 1, code 00191
    key 2, code 00120
    key 3, code 00065
    key 4, code 00180
    key 5, code 00143
    key 6, code 00155
    key 7, code 00122
    key 8, code 00117
    key 9, code 00129
    key 0, code 00123

9. Switch on Blu-Ray player, make sure their is no disc in it.
10. Press the remote buttons in the following sequence with about a
second pause between presses.

    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0

11. The Blu-Ray player should reboot itself and then it should play DVD from any
region.

See how you go with the above instructions but I have used an old Palm m100 which I still have. Not sure where you are but I'm on North Shore in Auckland, if it's of any use (Obviously I'm still in Level 4 at the moment)

I purchased a Panasonic UB820 UHD Blu-ray player a couple of years ago and a local Panasonic repair agent in Hamilton unlocked it for free with no questions asked.

Not that it's been used much for watching standard def DVDs even though I've got stacks of Region 1 discs from back in the day.

Must be long taxi ride for importing a remote to be cheaper. 😀

Thanks for all the advice! I've ordered a Harmony, hopefully that will let me sort the region locking and provide some long term convenience.

Just a few minutes too late! Thanks very much for the offer, I'll be in touch if the Harmony doesn't work out.
