Hi everyone.
My current setup has a PS3, a Pioneer DV350 DVD player about 10yo??, Old Sony VCR, Sky box (old black Motorola) A new Denon AVR  and a new full HD LCD. My plan is to soon remove the Sky box and VCR to be replaced by MySky HD - this will then take up my 2nd HDMI input (the PS3 currently has the other one). Ultimately I plan to remove the PS3 back to the kids' TV and replace it with a dedicated Bluray player to get the gamers (read kids) off the family viewing system.
One issue I have at present is with playing DVDs. I have quite a collection of region 2 DVDs.
The current DVD player is multiregioned so is fine for playing anything, but the output options are SCART or composite so I'm not seeing anything better than I had on the CRT TV.
The PS3 is NZ purchased so is DVD Region 4, although it does play some of my R2 movies.
So firstly, is it possible to multiregion a PS3 DVD; if so how?
If not possible (which I think is the probable answer), then what are people's thoughts on replacing the Pioneer with a (say) DSE HDMI DVD for $90 - the plus I see is it will upscale (but so will the AVR) and is multiregion; the downside is I'm then going to need a HDMI switch as I will have 3 HDMI inputs (when MySky is in soon)

The reason it plays some R2 DVDs is because they are probably not in fact region-restricted - many say they are but are in fact all/multi-region DVDs when you actually check.

I would have thought it would be possible to make it multi-region for DVD playback if you install Linux onto it and playback from within that OS. Alternately why not just rip them and remove the region protection?

Since you're going to replace the PS3 with a Blu Ray player, and that will play DVDs as well, are any of the Blu Ray players region free for DVD? It seems a shame to have another player just for the DVDs...

im sure there are few bluray players out there with region free dvd playing capability.

if i were you, i would purchase a dedicated and decent multi-region/region-free dvd player, so you still can enjoy watch it in 1080p. something like oppo 980 or 981 or 983, would your best bet. i have the 981 and so far it's an excellent multi region player. i also have a pioneer 989 as a reference player which i use only because of its excellent sound quality.

my suggestion is not to skimp with the cheapest dvd player out there, especially if you have a 1080p full hd tv at home. you want a player that have a decent video processor, at least faroudja processor, to take the advantage of your 1080p tv. there's nothing worse watching a dvd with horrible picture quality in big tv.
