Recently bought a Sony all-in-one home theatre (DAV-FX900KW) but about a week ago I was given a Sony DVD recorder (an HX-750 my grandfather bought; he couldn't figure out how to use it). Will I need to buy an AV receiver to get surround sound out of the DVD recorder, or can I connect it to the all-in-one unit instead? Come to that, do I need to connect the DVD recorder it to anything given there are six speaker connections on its back panel?
Depends on what the DVD recorder puts out. The Sony all in one is the same as mine, and you can feed it good sound on the two digital inputs (optical or Coax), I have my bluray player feeding the optical and MySky HD feeding the coax. Both give full surround sound. What is missing is an HDMI input but this shouldn't be a problem for you if you can feed the video straight into your screen.
Thanks for the advice - seem to have everything hooked up and working without the all-in-one home theatre at the moment (after about three hours work! Not good with all these cables). Just to check that I understand you correctly - the only cable I'll have to add is a digital coax or optical from the dvd recorder to all-in-one? Will that give me sound through all speakers for Sky? The DVD recorder has Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Out. Cheers,
Blair
PS: Apologies for the delay in replying, been away from home for a few days.
Yes, adding the digital cable (either optical or coax depending on your source) will feed 5.1 surround sound to the AV system. Not sure where sky fits into your layout, but I believe that you need MySkyHD to get 5.1 sound from sky. If so then you can feed the sound over digital direct into your AV system and you will get the 5.1.
