hi, i am thinking of purchasing the dmr-eh68. i have been told it is just like the dmr-eh67. i live in the u.s. and understand i cannot use the tuner without a pal converter box. if though, i do not care about the tuner, and, i just record to the hard drive from say a tivo unit. when i write a dvd from a file on the hard drive, will it be able to be read on any dvd player in the u.s.? or does it write in some pal format to the dvd so it will not play on a u.s. dvd player? or does pal and ntsc only apply to the tuner and have nothing at all to do with the hard drive and dvd/dub writer? i guess what i am saying is can i use this unit only for storage and writing dvd in the u.s. market?

If you want it to work in the USA, buy it in the USA. Buying product "out of market" is hit and miss at best.

Ha, I was going to say the same thing but was being polite.  Man, if you are being given this for free, then take it and try it, might work.  If not, go buy something local.

In NZ a lot of our TV's are dual NTSC and PAL.  I'm not sure if this is the same for you, where your TV may not be as tolerant of a PAL signal.  Buy something local.

I have used another dvd-r to record stuff, it was a panasonic with a VHS and a DVD-R in one.

Anyway, it needed you to set it to pal or ntsc before recording anything to disc - there was no ability to mix and match, but what it recorded was a proper ntsc dvd when given an ntsc vhs tape..

Without changing it, the thing would put the ntsc image at the top of the picture with random crap below it in the additional lines that a pal recording has. But it worked fine for backing up my ntsc music vids to dvd - just means that I ended up with 2 half full discs for several artists.
