Approx 6-8 weeks ago i replaced the Lamp in my Sony 60" rear projection TV. About 4 weeks ago i started to notice a blue glow in the bottom lefthand corner which gradually got more prominnent. There is now also a slight blue glow across the bottom 5 cms of the screen. Adjusting the brightness only effects the blue glow slightly whilst adjust contrast and picture has no effect. i.e. when screen is blacked out there is still the glow in the bottom left corner. if i grab the top and bottom of the tv and twist it moves the glow slightly back and forth but if i push on the screen in the location of the glow nothing happens.

Any ideas or help with this problem would be much appreciated

Was this a Sony or third party bulb? Have you contacted Sony about it?

After a few phone calls I found that this problem has now been  made common knowledge amongst sonyservice technicians and local technecians can now fix the problem without having to send parts away. Now the money side of things. If you are inside warranty then you are allgood. Otherwise it's going to cost between $200-$300 however from what i've been told Sony may cover this if depending on hours on the bulb. I forgot ask if once the problem is fixed if it is likely to recur?

I trust they won't kick up a fuss over the non OEM bulb you are using! Once upon a time I thought about getting a SRXD set but in the end for a JVC D-ILA one instead. Perhaps in hindsight that was a good decision :)

Bit of and update. The repair company has got back to me and told me its going to cost $1200 to repair and because the TV has done over 8000hrs they will only contribute $400 dollars. So i've gone back to Sony and basically said WTF and i'm now waiting for a response. The repair company told me of exactly the same problem happening with another 1 of their customers who went back to Sony and managed to get the full amount covered.

Oh i ddint mention earlier my Warranty ran out in Jan

Consumer guarantees act - reasonable life time of a TV > 5 years. Worst case, you have to take them to the distributes tribunal, but, you should get this covered - regardless of what they tell you.

Just one bit of clarification, you say "The Bulb was bought through a third party but is the exact model of the Sony bulb."

So - the bulb is a Sony branded/manufactured unit brought through a third party, or, a oem equivilant bulb?

How long was the warranty - 1 or 2 years?

I had a similar issue with the bulb on my JVD D-ILA RP TV. After 25 months I started to get replace bulb messages. JVC said it was out of warranty and I would have to pay about $650 for a new bulb! I just got one off ebay for US$110 which works fine. Of course that is the only problem - nothing wrong with the display unit etc.

Yea think next course of action would be threaten with disputes tribunal or Fair Go or sumthing. Warranty was for 3years, ive had the TV 3years 4months. The bulb was bought thru 3rd party projectorlamps.co.nz the bulb comes from the same factory that makes the bulbs for sony. The bulb was stamped with exactly the same markings as the one i took out.

This problem has nothing to do with the bulb, its to do with the optical display unit(not sure if thats the correct name). Changing the bulb and blue glow starting was just coincendental as far as i am aware.

Well i chased up Sony today because i had not heard back from them. My complaint was forwarded again, this time to the Manager of whatever the department handles this kind of thing. My call was returned within 30mins and i was told Sony would cover the complete repair bill. YAY. Goodwork Sony for finally coming to the party bit slow on getting there.

Good work Paybac. It's ridiculous that a television should have huge prolems after such a short time. I remember reading that there were huge problems with the optic block in the SXRD series. There was even a class suit filed in America, so you have to wonder what will be happening five years down the track.
