Trying to setup 5.1 home theatre using a wall mount subwoofer.
My av reciver is capable of 7.1 am i able to to run a non powered sub off one of the spare channels or do i have to run the subwoofer pre out to another amp then to the subwoofer.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Depends on your receiver.
Some have the option, (some pioneers did), so you might be in luck.

A reciever is usually a pretty weak 100watts at best - hardly able to do much in a sub at the volumes you should have a home theater at.

There are quite a few affordable power amps at http://www.globalmediapro.com/dc/C2W2/Professional-Audio/Amplifiers/Power-Amplifiers/ - they seem to live up to a reasonable percent of the claimed wattage (unlike car amps etc) and are cheap as for the power they deliver.

I guess to be specific we'd need to ask what sort of install is it and what sort of power rating is the subwoofer speaker? If it's a Jaycar type model then I think it's rated at about 100W max for instance, so a receiver with a subwoofer output option might be viable, otherwise yes, you'd need something serious if you were honestly going for a more powerful option. And I'd probably have to ask why wall mounted?

Was gonna say exactly the same. The low frequency vibrations could result in the subwoofer falling from the wall and taking some pieces of it along the way.
