I have a Marantz SR5002 with a Yamaha NS7900 5.1 speaker system. Does anyone know how i can lower the volume on the centre speaker? The 5002 has a microphone setup for the speaker adjustment and it says 80% of the sound should come from the center speaker, but this to me overpowers the other two front speakers. Is this how it should be and how can i lower the volume of the centre one only? thanks
Regardless of the auto setup, you should be able to overide some settings to lower the volume of any one speaker.
Just a point to note though, if you're playing a 2 channel/stereo source through a 5.1 amplifier and it's set to some virtual surround type setting, often these settings end up playing a large amount of the sound through the centre speaker. So, If this is a problem in 5.1 sources, such as dvds etc then it's a real volume problem. If this is happening when you're taking a 2 channel source and trying to set your system to make sound from all 5.1 speakers then this is often a byproduct of that receiver guesswork as it approximates what sounds come out what speakers.
I too have an SR5002 and have been thinking about the center speaker volume recently. However many of my thoughts lean towards the center not being loud enough.
Using the microphone to set it up is very nice and handy if you haven't already used it.
I have my HTPC outputting through optical to the AMP so that whatever signal is sent from the HTPC can be detected by the AMP automagically and spat out with the right speakers rather than having some 'fake' 5.1 settings attempting to tell me how i should be listening to things.
I haven't looked into raising the center volume but didn't anticipate it being particularly difficult. The manual is online in PDF format on the Marantz website which is good as you can search a PDF much faster than a hard copy. I'd start there first.
