I have a strange one here. I duely formatted my nice and new Seagate 500GB standalone HDD to FAT32 (kept a partition of 200gb in NTFS for other purposes) moved my mp3s and other media files to it and attached it via USB to the PS3. Nice little setup I thought for my music, games and movies to play through the stereo.

But, when I play music off the external HDD, the playback stops and the PS3 returns to the XMB screen after a seemingly random interval. Usually after at least a couple of minutes has passed, sometimes after twenty minutes or more. I can't see a pattern to figure what it might relate to. Strangely the setup works fine for video files, which play to the end no problem.

This is the first time I've made a post after much browsing of geekzone advice - but my searches on this problem have come to nothing. Suggestions anyone?

Hi and welcome to Geekzone ;)

sounds weird :(

Does the music stop on the same type of file?
Under "System" there are a few settings that should be enabled on the PS3, which you probably have but will list just in case.
Enable ATRAC, enable WMA Playback
Corrupt audio files? - try playing them thru PC connection?
if however it will play a file once and then randomly not play it the second time?
try defragging the USB drive..

Cheers for the welcome and thanks for the tips. The options are enabled and files are ok. I'll try defragging the drive - but at the moment there's still plenty of room on it.

Funnily enough I have the drive sitting further away from the PS3 now and it hasn't stopped for a while so perhaps it was heat, though previously it was always sitting at the opposite end from the exhaust fan (on an open shelf, but only an inch away from the the PS3). Though I can't see why heat wouldn't also have disrupted playback of video files. Will keep it in the new location for a while anyway and see how it goes..
