Hi, I am looking at the onkyo hts5205 reciever and speaker package. I realise it is only low end but it is for our family room to go with the samsung la40a450 lcd tv. I'm over the crap sound from the tv but dont want to spend  huge dollars. Does this system look like a good buy or is there something better for the same sort of money.

Cheers

Glenn

I was looking at this a month ago. I thought it looked quite good value.

I think its $1200 at Eastern HiFi - they normally sell only the high end products - so I figured that they must think its not too bad.

There are a few reviews - mostly say its good value.
This review is probably useful:
http://tech2.in.com/india/reviews/home-theater-systems-hifi-tv/onkyo-hts5205-home-theater-system/91072/0

I gather it doesnt do Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio decoding from another review I found.
What are they you ask? (My head was starting to hurt last time I looked at this), this tells you :
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-13817_7-6462511-4.html?tag=mncol;txt

They are formats that Blu-Ray disks 'might' use. It seems that some amps have the ability (provided the player outputs it) to get the raw data stream and decode the audio of these 'superior' audio formats. Its seems this (the TX-307 amp which is in this package) doesnt do that, but then as that last article says some Blu-Ray players will decode it anyway. If you are using DVD for the near future then this isnt important.

Now you have pointed out its down to $699 at NL I may have to go and do something about it. Just dreading what we have to do to our small lounge to get the speaker wire in.....

Thanks for the reply. It seems to be not to bd a system. I think I will go down tomorrow and get it. There doesn't seem to be alot of systems with satelite speakers any more. Only problem I have now is the shelf in the cabinet I made is 150mm high and the reciever is 151.5mm high. How much air space around the reciever should I have? I have a feeling when I made the cbinet I was measuring the 5 disc dvd player rather than the amp that is in the lounge. DUH

Well I went down today, handed my $699 over and walked out with this system. Haven't set it up yet as I will need to modify my cabinet as tight fit my be too hot for it and I will need some longer speaker cable. Now I will be able to listen to tv with decent sound rather than the speaker in the tv.

Did you get one Rob? the guy at NL said a guy came in yesterday 5 mins from closing and just grabbed one without checking it out.

mrgts4, i will appreciate if you can do a review of this system. I'm torn between a panasonic SC-PT870 and this one. i'm inclined to get the pana because of my plasma and take advantage of viera link. but it seems that this is a good buy though i dont know much about home theatre.
