Have you tried pressing the right buttons on the laptop to put the output through the DVI port on the laptop? Usually when you hook up an external monitor you have to do something like this.

What are the laptop and plasma model numbers? Also the laptop Graphics (Gfx) card make (Nvidia / ATi / Intel etc)

Standard troubleshooting ideas:
1. Plasma set to correct 'DVI' channel / port
2. Check laptop display properties has recognised plasma as a 2nd display
3. Check the refresh rate on laptop Gfx Card matches highest refresh rate of plasma
4. Restart laptop with DVI cable plugged in to plasma
5. Find the Hotkey on laptop to switch display modes (My Lenovo T400 = FN+F7)

Out of other ideas for the moment until model numbers specify which laptop and plasma we are dealing with.

you need to press 2 buttons to make it send signal (as the tv said no signal that means either none sent or the laptop is broken or your wire is broken or your tv is broken)

press Fn
hold Fn while
press the external display button (usually doubled up as a numerical and !@#^&$ character above your letters)

if it can see a signal but can't display it you need to alter the frequency, resolution etc

Laptop - Acer Aspire 5520G
Plasma - Samsung PS42B430P2MXRD

suspect it could be the Gfx card but wouldnt have a clue what that is???..lol as my laptop did have some work done to it and some of the applications for empowering application not working..
thanks heaps

A lot of plasma tvs only display 1024x768 on the VGA/dvi inputs, have you tried setting your laptop to that?

you need to tell the laptop to send a second signal. it will always show one monitor unless you tell it to send a second signal. you need to press the 2 buttons, have you done that?

the 2 buttons just turns on cloneing if the laptop has detected a display, and will do nothing otherwise (or may clone to the svideo port) - if there are not 2 screens showing in the display propertys either the cable is stuffed or the TV doesnt do edid on its dvi-d port (but I think it has to for it to work at all with dvi-d)

Has the cable proven itself on another setup? There are so many poorly made cables being sold now its not funny.

Hey Joker yes tried the 2 hot keys using function and pressing another button but still no signal...one of the keys made my laptop screen go blank, another key (with 2 screens on it) did nothing....i only just bought the cable brand new...a bit stumped now on what to do next?..you think the graphics card has anything to do with it??.....could this affect the signal of the laptop to plasma tv??...although i do have wireless modemn which connects ok..

Heres what I do to get my laptop working on my Plasma.

Step one. On the TV settings I go to the "Input" mode (whatever its called) and change the input from HDMI (which connects to my DVD / Freeview switcher) to "PC". Reason being your TV can input from different devices - you just need to tell it which one.

Step two. Plug in the wire into the Laptop and plug it into the TV. Then I press the "FN" (Function) key and the F4 Monitor (could be F5 - whatever one has the picture of a tv screen on it) at the same time. If you press these keys once you may get a blank laptop screen but should get a picture on the TV. If you press them twice you may get a picture on your laptop as well as the TV.

From there you may need to change the ressolution setting in your laptop to get teh Display image properly sorted out - but the first two steps should at least get an image to your TV.
