Hi all, I have a lip sync problem that is occurring on FreeView stations with HE-AAC encoding. I have no problem with TV3 which broadcasts in Dolby Digital.

I have a Samsung 50" Plasma TV (Model# PS50B850Y1M) which is connected to a Pioneer Receiver (Model# VSX-819H-K) via S/PDIF Digital Audio.

When I choose a Freeview channel with Dolby Digital audio (TV3) the audio output from the receiver speakers is perfectly in sync with the audio output from the built-in TV Speakers.

When I choose a Freeview channel with HE-AAC audio (TV1/TV2) the audio output from the receiver speakers is delayed and is out-of-sync with the audio coming from the built-in TV Speakers. I would estimate the delay to be around 200ms - 250ms but this is purely an non-scientific guess.

I have upgraded the TV Firmware to the latest version, but this has not helped.

Any assistance appreciated.

Any options for lip synching or auto audio sync in your receiver?

It doesn't sound like it it the TV that is the problem (assuming that the TV is doing the Freeview decoding?). If it is delayed on your Receiver then it sounds like a processing delay on the receiver.

Is there an audio delay setting on the recevier or the TV? I know MySky boxes have them for digital audio to overcome this very problem.

There is an Auto-Sync feature but it seems to only be applicable to audio delivered via HDMI.

There is an Audo Delay feature but it only can delay the audio, not bring it forward. Also it is Global, I can not seem to be able to apply it to specific Codecs.

It's like I need to delay the transmission of video from the TV, but only for HE-AAC, not Dolby :-/

Probably some DSP stuff happening on the reciver. Try it in stereo direct or whatever its called and see how you go.

Thanks. I have tried every input setting possible on the Receiver. "Stereo Direct" was the setting which I had hoped would fix the problem but it has made no difference.

So I have spoken to Samsung (0800 SUMSUN) they have never had this problem reported to them before and I have spoken to Pioneer, they also have never had this problem reported to them.

Harvey Norman (The suppliers of the solution) are being very helpful but seem to be stuck between a rock and a hard place with the two vendors pointing the finger in the opposite direction.

Harvey Norman have offered to loan me a Freeview Decoder, with HDMI and S/PDIF outputs.

I am going to firstly connect the HDMI to the Pioneer which in turn is connected to the TV via HDMI. I am expecting the Audio and Video to be carried on the HDMI signal. HDMI has an auto-sync so I am expecting that the lip-sync problem will be eliminated.

Then I am going to connect the Decoder-HDMI to the TV and the S/PDIF to the Pioneeer and observe the results.

Finally I will connect the S/PDIF back to the TV so the singnal is Decoder <--HDMI--> TV <--S/PDIF--> Receiver. and observe the results.

Can anyone think of any other test that I should do?

Of course if I have no problem with any of this I am still going to be stuck, I guess it will depend on if the Set-top Freeview Decoder does any alteration of the Audio signal.

Audio sync issues have been an ongoing issue with Samsung TV's. Radiola were even hooking up connections to the speakers to use as a line out for some people to overcome these issues.
