Hi all,

Looking for a little bit of help with stuttering video in Windows Media Center on a Windows 7 64 bit system. I'm using a PCTV 73e USB dongle with the small antennae attached to it.

I can play the "Freeview | HD" channel fine but all of the other video channels have really bad video stuttering issues. What often seems to happen is that the first frame of the video is repeatedly inserted into the playing video a couple of times a second. Also, all of the rest of the video looks like it's playing the frames out of order, like field-reversal however maybe worse?

If I scan through a video I have recorded or is being played then it looks like each frame has been cleanly recorded. I have occasional problems with missing info in frames from a loss of data through bad reception but most of the time the video plays fine on the Freeview | HD channel and on previous installs of my computer I have had things working perfectly over all channels with only occasional signal issues.

The last bit of info I have at the moment is if I swap between two of the stuttering video channels then one of the frames from the previous channel is held over and is repeatedly inserted into the new channel a couple of times a second.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

Thanks for all help.

Patrick

One more thing, I've just played the Freeview | HD channel twice now for a longer period of time and both times after 15 minutes of constant viewing the stuttering starts happening in that channel too. If I stop the channel and restart it then the problem disappears.

PaddyPatPat: The last bit of info I have at the moment is ...

Nope. This is not the last bit of info you can provide us. You left out amount of memory on your system, what video card you are using, if you are using the default codecs of if you installed any other codec...

If you could provide a bit more information that would help people here help you.

Sorry, you're right.

Ok so..

I have 6GB of DDR2 RAM.
My video card is a Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS 512MB
I have Nvidia Drivers installed, using version 1.10.62.40
I am using the default codecs.
Using a Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz, not overclocked
I have a RAID 0 over 4 harddrives using the intel motherboard controller.

I have recently installed a lot of programs to try to convert the records to something I can play on my AppleTV but with no success so far. The problem was occurring before I started installing these programs.

Hmmmmm what else would be useful to know?

Cheers,

Patrick.

Ok, more info.

I have recorded a few videos, mainly from TVNZ7. I decided to play them from Windows Media Player and found that if I started one of the records around half-way through the 5 minute clip and play to the very end it stutters badly and there is even some blockiness like you'd see from bad reception for the whole of the clip. However, if I skip forward to just before the end there is a point where the video will play fine to the end of the clip.

Ummm... I could start to make a guess now for fixes/tests but rather than bias the conversation I'll leave it up to you for suggestions.

Thanks for your time and help,

Patrick.

First thing would be to get a real antenna, not the litte one.

If you play back the recording that you made does it stutter in the same place each time? If so then it is not your playback hardware/software but the datasteam you have recorded.
As freitasm says replace the little antenna with a better one. Preferably a full size external one but depending on were you are a inside one may be enough to at least prove that it is reception that is the issue.
