Do you specifically want small speakers? I got Wharfdale Vardus speakers from L V Martin for $1200 less 20% during a sale. The main speakers are floor standing, they're reasonably large. The rear ones are quite big too.

They sound hugely better than any stereo i've had before, but they're definitely not high end. They're more than enough for me for now though.

I went from larger front standing speakers to satellite speakers and regretted it.

I am now changing back again. I am yet to hear any satellite speaker, regardless of price, that sounds as good as even a moderately priced floor standing speaker. This is especially true for music, you will really miss the midrange with satellites.

Can you fit bookshelf sized speakers?

i have had kef kht.2002 which looks like what jb hifi has for $1300 (they cost me more like $2500 a few years back).  I have been very happy with them sound-wise.

The subwoofer is  busted right now though - the original design never actually switched off the sub when idle, so a few capacitors eventually burnt out.  They were replacing them on warranty at one stage, but i bought mine in hong kong so i have to fork out about $150 to get it fixed here in NZ...

I suspect that the newer models wont have the same subbie problems, but it wouldnt hurt to ask..  i'd still recommend them though, they do sound great.

Once I drpped off the kids and done the gym thing in the morning...I might rock into JB hifi for another listen to both Jamo and KEF

I have the Jamo A402 HCS5. 5.1 Sub Sat system. Bought it about a year back as a starter 5.1 setup Running from an Onkyo TX-SR507...Its o.k....Have recently added some Wharfedale Diamond 9.5 floor standers. And the difference for movies wasn't huge. But for music was vast. If the Jamo pack is mainly for movies you wont be disappointed. They would sound better being driven By a better receiver the Onkyo can be a bit safe sounding..

Can you possibly keep floor standers for the front? I have floor standers front and sats for surround and find that works fine. There is a lot less need for full range speakers on the surrounds but the fronts and centre need to be up to the task.

I am actually using two floor standers and then a 5.1 sat speaker package in a 7.1 configuration.

I have the Audica cs system 2 hooked up to my Onkyo TX-SR606 and I'm more than happy with the sound. I can't fault them at all.

Yeah, I bought it off Trade Me, but it was a couple of years ago so I'm not sure how much I paid. It might've been around $1200.
