Greets, first time Iv tried a forum for an issue... Just used a rattlebite dvd region unlocker on the above, seems to have worked fine, played one NTSC dics no probs. But, Next NTSC disc played with big grey bars left and right, along with big black bars top and bottom, result = very small picture. All attemps at aspect changes, settings changes, muttering and swearing changes have failed..
Seems like its something to do with encoding of disc? (Disc is The Abyss, directors version)
Any help with this one would be REALLY appreciated.

I have seen that before on one that was playing a disc that was 4:3 with letterboxing, instead of being tagged as widescreen and being full height.

Zoom on the player remote solved it sort of, but the player cant really know that the idiots that made the disc letterboxed it in frame.

The Abyss DVD is a non-anamorphic abomination.

On a widescreen TV it will playback with bars all around.
I note that you mentioned grey bars, on the Panasonic BD60 you can change the colour to black by switching off the screen saver function.

The only known 16x9 widescreen version of The Abyss is the R6 Chinese DVD.

Try another NTSC DVD.

Yeahhh, figured it might be something to do with the disc, how crazy is that! New I was in the poo when my step son who,s a JB Hi Fi manager couldn't get it to work either.
Thanks heaps.
Praps if I import an american dvd player I will be able to watch it without binoculars huh LOL

This disc is made for NON WIDESCREEN televisions, with letterboxing in the picture. You have to zoom it in either on the player or the TV, just using another player will not solve the problem.

IMO, bin the disc or sell it to someone on trademe and get it on a properly mastered format.

This thread is bringing back old memories of the haphazard way DVDs were mastered in the early days.

Random oddness like non-anamorphic DVDs with Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks or anamorphic DVDs with plain old 2.0 channel sound.

It seemed each release would differ from region to region.

Websites like http://www.dvdcompare.net/ were a godsend.
