I just got my pioneer VSX-520-K receiver today.  After hooking everything up I found out that this receiver will not play sound out of the speakers and the tv at the same time without another cord.  I talked to bestbuy and they told me I needed to run an audio cord from the receiver to my tv.  Is there a certain cord I need to get or would the standard yellow, white and red cords work?  Thanks for the help

What you are describing is correct.

It is intened that the receiver handle sound, so the receiver does not send any sound up the video cable to the TV as it does not expect the TV to be making sound.

Depending on what you want to be doing this is exactly as it should be. Playing sound via the receiver AND the TV will often result in echo's/phase/delay issues betwen the receiver and the TV speakers as one source will play before the other one.

Some receivers do off the ability to pass sound via the hdmi cable to the TV as well as put sound out the receiver. Typically this results in the receiver down grading it's output to stereo only to match the TV.

So, before you go and get a cable, could you explain:
What exactly it is that you want to do acheive
What your source is, DVD player, sky box etc.
How you connect your receiver to the TV
How you connect your receiver to the sources, like DVD player/skybox/freeview box etc.

Not sure what you are trying to do but why would you want to send sound to the TV from your receiver amp?
Turning up the volume on the TV and amp would make for some weird echos and mixing.
Interestingly my Sony EX720 receiver menu allows sound out to either TV speakers or external amp but not both at the same time presumably to avoid this. Older models did allow simultaneous sound.

it's designed so you don't get sound from both at the same time ....
