I have just bought a LG 6500 (shocking sound) and want to connect it to my old Yamaha RX-930, until I can afford a decent surround system. As it has no optical input, RCA only, has anybody had any experience with the Coaxial/Optical to Audio Converters that sell for around $65 on TradeMe. That is the main part of my question but a secondary question would be as I have a Bose cube and base box speaker setup plus a pair of Mirage speakers, could I buy A $1000 Yamaha receiver plus a centre speaker and have passable 5.1 setup. Please know that I am a retired guy with limited funds and not razor sharp hearing. Any constuctive help would be appreciated but I am also open to maybe I am a dreamer.

Get an adapter for the headphone socket on the TV. Its a 3.5mm plug ---> 2 rca sockets.

Have you got a jaycar store anywhere near you?

They have a 7 day no questions asked return policy (as long as packaging is undamaged). That way you ccould try the above adapter to see if it produces the effect you are after.

I got one of the TOSLink to analog converters from jaycar recently to fix the lack of analog audio out of an LG plasma, worked a treat. Obviously it will only work with PCM feeds not DD, however the optical to coax (ie not analog) converters will pass DD between ports.
