Hi all

I don't usually write stories about myself, prefer to leave that for others to do, but ended up here after a search on Telecom / Chorus Wireline (the fantastically terrible infrastructure of NZ corporations) so figured it is time I jump in and get my feet wet.

Who am I -

Grant Keinzley. Born in Auckland NZ '67 (USA year of the hippy). Got buried in computers in '82 with my first computer - Commodore 64, and have been in computer industry ever since.

In 2002 I went to Asia, and October 2013 came home again. No trips home in between.

In Asia I built from the ground up a Typhoon (really big cyclones) Rescue Org. Over the years I got it licensed, recognized by the UN, and today it spans 4 China Provinces and has over 10,000 part time rescue staff.

Also at the same time I established and ran my own computer / IT company.

It started with 3D Virtual World games, then onto running a small datacenter, then we went onto software development, then onto Cloud Server Infrastructure, then onto a 5 bln USD CPU design and OS development project (beginnings of Tablet PC era), and finally building Multimedia Systems (the today Smart TV's you see that come from China).

Now back home I am rebuilding my IT Company here in NZ.
I am a little older than before, I am allot wiser than I pretend to be, and I am slowly (as all things in NZ are done) getting back into the game.

My NZ startup (on another day will add to the Startup Forum) is called spoon IT. It can be spoken as "spoonit" like "damn it!!", and "spoon eye tea" like "black eyed peas" which is in its today presence a small ISP focusing on the Taranaki market sector, a NZ sports almanac, a tongue in cheek news website, and a couple of other smaller online things.

Over the next two years I will be bringing in to NZ my global team as a part of my company NZ rebuild.

On my team is

Indian Sohan Singh an international leader and lecturer for Cloud Hosting,
Canadian Sandy Harris from original IPsec team and still on the developer teams for SHA*,
American Jon Voglino International Pro Gamer,
American Wing Choi double PhD Business Management and Business Internationalization and co-author of Los Angeles / China Trade Agreements,
and my favourite; Hong Kong Jesse Chau my marketing guru.

So thats me, my team, my company, and I guess I should end with - Happy to be back home in clean NZ :)

Thanks and yeah its truly is good to be back home.

Big Ben Pies, Tip Top ice cream, Banana Cake, and more, you wouldn't believe how much you miss the simple things that make up Kiwi life when you're away from it all.

One thing I aint having much fun with is NZ internet....I still can't believe we are still on telephone cables. My last home in Asia I had 2 Internet cables wired, each at 100MiB Up and Down, no bandwidth limits, both for a total of NZ$30.oo per month.

Impressive team you bring with you.
Theres lots of ISP presence on this forum, and they're generally pretty proud of their wholesalers infrastructure. Internet 'there' sure sounds nice though.

Thanks but don't misunderstand, I am not putting down Alexander Bell and all of the phone networkers since him.

Just thought I would mention that it is a massive culture shock going from streaming media cable to my email might get sent on a good day DSL :)

The big event abroad nowadays is Wireless Internet....Hoping the deciders in NZ get past the fiber journey soon and jump on over to Wireless for their next big builds.

Internet is only good when its fast. When its not we all sing "I will walk 500 miles to send my email" lol

Err... Wireless better than fibre? /me scratches head.

EDIT: I'm on VDSL over the horrible telephone network you speak of and must say it's been completely rock solid, delivering 40/10Mbps consistently and completely reliably. While I am looking forward to UFB I have no issues with my current connection, and know others on VDSL who get over 60/10. If your DSL is having problems just sending emails I would suggest looking at whether there is perhaps internal wiring issues, raising a fault with ISP, etc.

(And there's no way I would want to go wireless for my internet unless I was rural without access to decent DSL or fibre, which is generally where it's used in NZ :P )

Satellite? Wouldn't latency would be awful with it going into space and back, voip and gaming would be pretty bad.

4G (real 4G not US style 3G marketed as 4G) mobile broadband is being rolled out here with the old analogue tv frequencies being freed up.

Also there are plenty of regional wireless providers eg: Primowireless covers Taranaki, and there are others form memory.

In NZ depending on where you live ADSL2+, VDSL2, Cable, Fibre, Wireless, 4G mobile, 3G mobile are available

Sounds like you are moving from a high density urban area in Asia to a low density rural area in the Taranaki? So you are going to have less options available currently.

you could move somewhere with faster Internet rather than moving somewhere with not and then complaining about it :) High density Asia is always going to have greater economies of scale to offer cheaper/faster Internet. But there's a reason you left that to return home

Welcome, and all the best with the future, but back to your 2x internet connections at 100MB/s, guess they came from the house next door, which came from the house next door to that, which in any one portion was <100m from the next, well that aint how it is here :)
