Hello there,

Have any one of you ordered laptop(s) from Australia? Do I need to pay some duty/tariff/customs payments when ordering laptop? In Europe you can buy stuff from online from different countries without need to declare them.

I was planning to get custom built gaming laptop to replace my working laptop which was stolen :S

You will have to pay customs if the price goes over a threshold.

Duty is fairly heavy, plus returns/warranty will be a giant pain.

I was looking at getting a custom Clevo but duty kills it.

I have found the MSI range to be close in price and feature set (MSI GE62/72) and available locally for ok money.

Thanks for the feedback. Ok :/ Thats kinda sad that you have to pay the customs :S

I was planning to get Clevo-laptop before I left Australia, but changed my mind few days before I left. I was able to get local GST off, because I'm from Europe :| Hmmh.
Wasabi2k. Do you have any experience with MSI laptops? I have bad experiences with their motherboards, but no experience from laptops.
I'm planning to spend about 1200-1500$ to get one.. I'm planning to play GTA5 with and it should last for next 4-5 years

The latest GE62/72 have reviewed well and have everything I want/need. No personal experience sorry. I am hoping to buy one next month.

A GTX960M is my minimum for GPU - you are looking at a minimum of $2200 or so for that.

Don't know how much you will get for $1500.

i have one of those, you can get it without the 16gb ram and with out the SSD and its down around the 1500 mark, it meets the minimum requirement for GTA V, But i havent tried to play it.

i think you would struggle to get much more than a GTX850M for less than $1500

i like the laptop, the keyboard is a little annoying for me at times but i havent had any issues with it. It is a little noisy when you are thrashing the CPU

Yea I was thinking one with I7 (4xxx) processor, 8GB ram and atleast GTX 850M. I can get more ram and SSD later. That combination should be able to run GTA5 quite easily (according Game-debates calculator).

Jase2985 those specs looks quite good :)

Hmmh. Maybe I should rise the amount a little bit :| It would grant year or two more living time for the computer. Before I'm doing that, I have to wait what insurance company answers. Not waiting anything from them :S

Fly to the cheapest Aus city you can get a ticket to and buy one, claim the GST back through TRS as you leave the country and avoid any duty coming back in NZ. GST refund will probably pay most of the flights, and maybe you can have a holiday too

yea they are pretty good, have used them for other computer components, Just Laptops just allowed a little more customization in terms of RAM and HDD's when buying the laptop.

Also a good idea when buying stuff like wedding/engagement rings.

Friend of ours picked up my wife's on the way to Oz for a work trip - saved us a bunch.

pay your fair share of tax, its not right to other tax payers or society as a whole trying to work around the tax system.

We all pay tax to support NZs generous welfare, education, health etc
