I currently have an old acer aspire1350 with a mere 40gb hard drive and no inbuilt wifi and xp basis and my partner has a dell latitude D610 with an intel centrino  xp pro but again only 40gb hard drive. I am thinking about getting a new laptop so I can...
1.usual email and surfing
2.burning (I have an external burner but neither computer will recognise it via usb)/ My daughter can destroy a dvd in seconds
3. Watching xvid and hopefully joost tv
4.Occasional games
5.Some basis movie editing to send movies of the kids to the grandparents
6. Storing all the photos and movies etc etc

I am getting a 60Gb PS3 next week. i tried one before christmas but the game "lair" was that disappointing i turned down a good deal. The PS3 upgrade to play DIVX has made it seem more attractive but when i tried tversity with the trial ps3 i couldn't get it to work so didn't go for it pre xmas. Got nice xmas bonus at work so got the chance to get another.

I thought as i was getting the ps3 I should get a new laptop with more memory and a dedicated graphics chip and let my 3 year old run riot on the old acer.

I don't have any room for a desktop plus we like surfing on the sofa in the evening or webcamming with the Grandparents in the uk. It is easier if this stuff is mobile..

I have a couple of questions and a couple of possibles

Q1. Do i need a new laptop? Would there be any easy upgrade to improve performance. It has started freezing overnight the screen goes all skew wiff (the start button moves to the top of the screen)

Q2. Should i stay away from vista? Is it easy to move stuff from my old XP computer to a new vista one?

I have been looking at these 3 laptops today

L1- Dell inspiron 1520 @ $1799 http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/notebooks_better?c=nz&cs=nzdhs1&l=en&s=dhs#connect

Same processor as above but with a 17 inch screen but only 128mb graphics card and 1mb memory

L3- Acer @ 1799 on special at noel leeming and bond and bond until end of tomorrow  http://www.noelleeming.co.nz/computers/computers/laptops/notebooks/acer-as5920g-3a2g25mn-aspire-as5920g-3a2g25mn-notebook/prod98157.html

Acer Aspire AS5920G-3A2G16Mn Notebook

AS5920G-3A2G16MN

98157

Powerful Intel Core 2 Duo processor, large 15.4" wide screen, Massive 2GB RAM, & huge 160GB hard drive. Nvidia GeForce Go8400M, 256MB dedicated graphics. Includes Acers' CrystalEye Web Camera

sorry if it seems long winded but I would appreciate your thoughts, especially as most geekzoners seem to like dells, My acer has been pretty good to me apart from advertising it had IR then not switching it on in the bios.

Thank you in advance

but it looks great and hopefully i will notice the graphics card
