Hi,

Can anyone tell me why my laptop freezes everytime I put a DVD/CD in it, it spins and makes the normal noises for awhile, then the whole system freezes,  pressing the eject button eventually works and it ejects and the system unfreezes?  Any ideas?

how long do you wait while your system is frozen?

some drives have a tendency to stall the OS while they're doing their initial reading of a disc.

what are you system specs like?

I'd be inclined to agree with musiclife here, it's either a driver issue for the CD Drive or the Drive itself has issues. To be honest with Laptop CD Drives (And especially Acers much as I love them) it's usually the hardware at fault. Try going into your Device Manager (If you're not sure how to do that just ask here because it depends on your OS), and uninstalling then re-installing the CD Drive manually (Again if you're not sure how just ask here). If that doesn't work though I'd say it is most likely the hardware.

One other thing you could try is have the Task manager up and running when you insert a CD/DVD. Right click on the Start bar at the bottom, from the pop up menu select Task Manager and then select the Processes tab in the Task Manager window, click on the CPU header to sort the processes into "By Most CPU used" with the process using the most CPU power at the top, then insert your CD/DVD and see if a specific process jumps to the top and starts using 100% CPU before/as the laptop freezes up. That might give you more of a clue as to what exactly is causing the freezing.
