I have just bought a laptop, it has Windows Vista home edition. My problem is trying to find an external tv tuner for it.
I just bought one and it refuses to tune in to tv. The programme works on my desktop pc, but the laptop says it is not plugged in or the drivers have not been installed. I have tried everything I know, updated the drivers for the tuner that I have bought, no luck there still the same message.
The tv tuner is capable of plugging into my vhs and downloading videos to convert to dvd.
Has anyone any ideas what I can do to fix this problem or which tv tuner should I look at buying.

First off

What type of tuner did you buy?

What software are you using?

What channels are you trying to get? Analogue TV or Freeview|HD?

You have just named the whole lineup of their TV tuners

Which one of these do you have:

And what type of signal/aerial are you plugging into it?
- Old fashioned UHF/VHF aerial (analogue)
- Satellite
- Terristrial

Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 MCE-Kit TV Tuner, FM Radio, External, USB 2.0, with Media Centre remote control, Supports Teletext

So it works fine on your desktop yes...and it is plug & play so it self installs the drivers required on first use yes?

But not on your laptop...

Have you tried other USB ports?
Maybe it does not like that usb port, could be USB 1.1 only instead of USB 2.0...or it could be damaged.
Many times I have found a device wont be recognised on a working USB port yet recognised on another.

Try your other USB ports...

Also, reading the Hauppauge product page, and also the support page for the product, I see no support for Vista, only up to XP.
The page states the TV tuner is a deleted line, so it does not sound like they are updating these...

Its replacement, the WinTV-HVR-1950, does have Vista support

You could try the Vista drivers used by the WinTV-HVR-1950...but the result I do not know.

Is your Desktop XP or Vista?
