Hello

I have a Toshiba satellite A10 and have connected ot an AOC widescreen monitor for which the optimum resolution is 1920 x 1080. Even though I have updated firmware and drivers, I am unable to set the rquired resolution.
Any assistance would be deeply appreciated.

did you connect with VGA cable or DVI? some monitors require DVI cables to get the higher resolutions - that's certainly with some tvs but not 100% sure about monitors ...

Thanks for your response. The cable is vga, but what is frustrating me is that when I enter displat settings through control panel, the required resolution is not available, in spite of having updated video drivers.

Does the monitor support 1920x1080 over VGA? It may only support it over DVI.

If the monitor doesn't allow it the PC won't (by default) allow you to select it.

You clearly need to use the DVI cable.

That's a pretty old model, the onboard video might not even support that resolution.

Thanks for reaponses to date. My computer has only VGA output, so I can not connect a DVI cable. The response from Ragnor defines the problem I can not see the required resolution in the display settings. I thought that by updating the drivers for the video device I might be able to get the resolution.
To reply to Joker 97, the onboard video device is Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME graphics controller . Does that provide a clue?

I run at work 1920x1080 to a AOC lcd via VGA, my guess it would be the video card cannot display at that resolution.

I think the chipset you say you have does support larger resolutions so I would suspect a problem with the drivers reading the monitors supported resolutions from the EDID data or the aforementioned monitor's VGA input doesn't support higher resolutions (but the DVI does).

Intel actually has an extensive wizard with a bunch of things to try for this kind of problem:

Have you made it to only output to the monitor?

If you are cloning the display, you'll be restricted by what the Laptop can display.

Thanks for suggestions. I have tried the Intel wizard, which was great (but I still have the problem). I am not cloning the display, which was something I didn't know about until you mentioned it.
Having loaded every update that Intel is offering, and checked out everyone's suggestions, I can think of two posibilities:
My computer is 6 years old, which could be the problem, or the driver supplied by the monitor company is apiece of garbage. I have asked the company for help, but have had no response.

which model do you have exactly? the A10's all have different GPUs in them. There should be a specific model number on the bottom.

somehow i doubt your graphics controller supports 1920x1080 (that's probably the case if the computer's more than 1-2 years old ...) but i can't find any evidence whether it does or not ... no table of supported resolutions from my quick search on intel site.

there is a resolution checker you can download - perhaps that will clarify

i have made some of the older A10's drive 1680x1050 by using custom modified graphics drivers from laptopvideo2go.com - this wasnt an out-of-the-box supported resolution, but it works ok. Never tried 1920x1080
