Gidday

Im looking at buying an external hard drive preferably 1 TB with eSata connection.
Looking to spend $150-$300.
Any advice on brands to go for?

Seagate gets my vote. WD makes some nice drives but I had problems with them before - the most common one was the drive going to sleep and not coming back unless you restart your laptop - it happened with both Mac and Windows-based machines.

I would suggest something like

combined with a

That way you can change hard drives, as your needs change. Also, the drive enclosure still supports a one-touch backup system if that is what you are looking for.

Seagate had a high publicity problem with a firmware bug in the last year, it caused a lot of problems with drives bricking themselves at boot up due to an overflow in an drive statistics log.

At the end of the day there's really no practical difference between going for Seagate, Western Digital or Samsung.. They all have roughly the same failure rate and similar reliability.

Go for whichever is cheaper at the specification you want (7200rpm 1TB 16MB cache etc).
