Welcome to Geekzone... It could be the LCD itself, or the backlight too. Better to take to a service place to check.

Your first quick test is to try plugging in an external screen. a standard crt from a desktop will plug into the vga port on the back.

If it boots normally with external screen you know it's an lcd related issue (lcd itself/backlight etc). If there's nothing on the external screen the problem is likely to be either a failed/loose ram module or something more severe, in which case, yes, take it somewhere to be looked at.

Remember when connecting an external monitor you might have (depending on the model) to press a Function key and other key to redirect the output to this monitor.

If the function key trick doesn't work, make sure the monitor is plugged in prior to turning on the unit. If an external monitor is detected it will normally default to that first.

Failing that your fault is elsewhere. :/
ie: in the guts on the unit, not the screen itself, which means you're probably best to take it somewhere to be serviced.

If you're based in Wellington give me a yell at PCS (www.pcs.co.nz)

Outside of Wellington your next best bet is to either go with word of mouth for a good service centre to take it to (doesn't necessarily have to be an NEC service centre). Or failing that have a trawl through the white/yellowpages.
