Hey all,

I'm in town visiting my parents and I've noticed their Wifi is pretty abysmal. Every few minutes it stops sending or receiving packets for a couple of minutes at a time before coming back. Ethernet is fine. They have the Thomson TG585 router with an old firmware version, and according to some forums upgrading the firmware can fix the issue.

Thought I'd try to find a forum or IRC channel where I could ask whether Xtra recommend updating the firmware, rather than waiting on the phone. Pretty disappointed with their level of support (they don't have their own forum??) but not at all surprised given their track record. But I'm not here to troll.

So.. anyone with an Xtra-provided Thomson router successfully updated firmware without issue? I don't want to inadvertently break my folks' internet entirely, and I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out Xtra doesn't support the latest version.

Cheers

I would grab a TP-Link TD-W8960N for <$70 and throw the older Thomson in the trash where it belongs.

thought this might be an alright thread to ask rather than making a brand new one.

I am still using the speedtouch st585 modem with a r6300 router. Do you think its time to upgrade to a newer modem? Would i see any improvements?

Cheers

Sorry if i am hijacking this thread
