I have spent a very frustrating afternoon assisting a friend who has had very unreliable access to Xtra email from his Laptop, iPad and iPhone. A have read a couple of postings where other people have experienced similar issues but the Xtra help desk doesn't admit to it being an issue. I know he should ditch the Xtra email addresses but he has used it for many years for his business.

The problem is that if you set up more than 2 devices with Pop access to email the accounts will report incorrect password errors until you log into Webmail and then you can access again until the error reappears. Can be 5 minutes or a couple of days.

I thought I would then just forward all Xtra email out to Gmail and then set a reply as address to the Xtra account, but the Apple devices don't appear to have a setting to allow this. So I setup the Pop servers as Gmail and the SMTP servers to Xtra. Laptop setup and worked, iPhone setup and worked, but the iPad locked up the account. Logging into Webmail fixes the issue until it reappears.

I note the Gmail recommends using the email address format of recent:username@gmail.com if you have multiple devices accessing the gmail account.

Does anyone have 3 devices or more accessing their Xtra email accounts via Pop or experiencing the same issues?

Hi, I would recommend staying with the Gmail account, load the Gmail app for iOS it will offer the same reply as features as the web interface, see correct setup and link below.

Never used the recent:username@gmail.com feature, never needed to, and I have literally hundreds of clients on both free and paid Google accounts.

Thanks Cyril

So I can set Pop and SMTP to Gmail and set the xtra.co.nz address to be the reply to address IOS App?

I know the Web client has the ability to set the Send As address which works when the recipient replies but when they mouse over the senders email address in has the Gmail address. not a big issue but..

Hi, the recommended method is forward all mail to the gmail account, and use it as your email hub. verify the xtra account and set as the default send from.

Then don't use the default iOS mail app, just delete all accounts from that and forget it. setup the gmail app for iOS app as per the link I sent, then all will come right.

On your iPad you may find it easier to just use safari and log into the web interface of the gmail account, the gmail server will recognise it as an iPad and give you an optimal render for iPad.

Cyril

Oh and please don't use pop or smtp, your doing it wrong if the are in the mix

POP is the wrong way to go about it, there is no way around that. If you set it up as a yahoo account on your iOS device it is an IMAP account.

There are a number of work arounds I can use but I first want to eliminate the following as unworkable.

Outlook 2010 client accessing Xtra email via Pop
iPad accessing Xtra email via Pop
iPhone accessing Xtra email via Pop

FYI - Xtra's (Yahoo) response to using IMAP

Can I use IMAP for my Yahoo!New Zealand email account?
Yes, there are IMAP settings you can use for your Yahoo!New Zealand account. However, we recommend using POP3. We are not able to provide any IMAP support beyond providing the basic settings.

If you want to access email on multiple devices POP is the wrong approach. It was never designed for this, and using it is nothing but a hack.

If you want multiple devices use an appropriate protocol such as ActiveSync (best) or IMAP (good).

Ive been using Imap to access my xtra emails at work for about a month & pop3 to read email at home . Seems to work fine.

Keep in mind the 'issues' of deleting email in imap, they will be gone. Could be an issue for some if you use more than 1 device . I think thats might be the reason its 'unsupported'  .
Another thing to try is to setup xtra on the iphone/android using the preconfigured 'yahoo email' option . Dont know if this will help or not, I assume its factory preconfigured as imap.

Ive seen the password issue you originally mentioned on a few customers Laptops, when they have laptop + iphone accessing xtra email.
It is real , but intermittent & not that common. This issue is known , but not often admitted to....

Try telling customers/clients this. They will give you a blank look , fully expecting pop3 to sync 100% (all folders) between 3 PC's .
facts & reason dont come into play :-(

You shouldn't be using Pop for multiple device access, it will result in terrible inconsistencies. use IMAP or Activesync

Spoke to Xtra Helpdesk which acknowledge it was a known issue and was a security feature (issue).... so when it happens we log onto the Web Mail to reset and will look to moving to new email provider and possibly own domain.

Good idea, and get well away from using POP at the same time!
