Hi all,

I've just been connected to bigpipe today however it's going extreeeemmmely slow, 0.40mbps down and 0.41mbps up, compared to 9.0mbps down and 0.7mbps up when I was on vodafone.

Could this be a router issue maybe? I'm using the ASUS DSL-N99 but only for ADSL2 not VDSL, to be honest the router seems like a piece of crap but I did have it set up yesterday running through vodafone and was getting constant 9mbps down. Or maybe it's a settings thing, anyone have this issue?

Cheers

What are your xDSL line stats?

How are you measuring that speed?

Do you mean 0.4Mb/s down, not mb/s?

Definitely sounds funky. (In a bad way)

Have you changed anything else about the connection - e.g. Where the modem is located, filter, wifi (are you testing over Ethernet or wifi?) etc.

What attenuation is your modem showing?

Drop our team a note through our site explaining your issue and one of our team will have a look tonight( (they are on until 8pm so sending the note sooner rather than later gives you the best chance of getting it resolved tonight if it can be), meantime have a look through the troubleshooting guide on the support section of our site and see if there is anything there that might help.

I'm just about to get on a plane so will be out of action here for a few hours, but I'm sure other helpful people will have some ideas.

I was using speedtest.net which I think I read not to use but not sure what else to test with. These are my stats, don't know what they mean though, will have to do some googling, and will email bigpipe like suggested :)

well that 40dB line attentation wont help

seems like you have a wiring issue

The speed you are getting is consistent with your connection sync rate - in simple terms you have a physical wiring issue.

40dB downstream attenuation indicates you are a long way from an exchange or cabinet, or something is physically wrong with the wiring somewhere.

Have you changed where the modem is plugged in, or changed a filter recently?

Also, roughly where are you - what suburb?

I'm in Greenlane, pretty close to the corner of rockfield and konini roads, haven't moved the router or changed any wiring etc, might pay to get a tech around to look at the wiring then I guess, just a bit strange that its dropped in speed so much since yesterday but I guess bad wiring is unpredictable.

Sorry haven't changed any filters recently either, might pay to try the one that came with the ASUS router, just don't have the right cable to plug it in to the wall unlike my current filter which has the phone plug built into it.

What cable does it need to plug in to the wall?

Do you have a single outlet that is marked "modem" or something similar?

I'm curious, are you sure it's a DSL-N99? As far as I'm aware that's not a valid Asus model. DSL-N66U perhaps?

Given the massive drop in sync speed, difficulty connecting the modem cable and that area being in a VDSL zone (so should be far higher sync rate), I'm picking that the modem may have been plugged in through a filter.

This could either be a master filter if the building has one (there will be a dedicated outlet to use the modem with), or just being plugged in to the wrong side of a plug in filter.

These are the 2 filters, the old one going into the wall and the new ASUS one which doesn't have the wall cable part built in, will pick a cable up for it tomorrow

Yeah I thought I was in range for VDSL too, I doubt there is a master filter installed judging by the previous owners who had this place for a long time, I've had thee whole place re-wired since being here, just not the phone lines, think I'll definitely look at getting someone round to check out the wiring, would be great to have VDSL!

Pay CoffeeBaron $150 and get him to fix up your line like a baus. It is well worth it seeing you've got unlimited fast broadband now (once the wiring is fixed) then you can get away from using those line filters which will be hindering performance. That way since you're in a VDSL area (or so you say) you'll be able to flick the switch to get VDSL and reallllly get some decent speeds (all dependant on how far you are from the cabinet/exchange)
