My mailer is Eudora ver 7.1.0.9 sponsored and I have an xtra email account. I have used Eudora for about 18 years and am reluctant to have to change now.

I am not able to get my mailer to send emails after changing the SMTP setting from smtp.xtra.co.nz to send.xtra.co.nz - I get the error message "Error talking to SMTP server [421 Cannot connect to SMTP server 124.108.96.158(]" and the email is not sent. When I change back to smtp.xtra.co.nz, emails transmit normally.

Two weeks ago I rang the Xtra/Spark Help desk and spent 45 minutes on the phone, much of it talking to an operator in the Philippines. She sought, and gave her, remote access to my computer. She fiddled around with my mailer settings for about 20 minutes. It was clear from my following of what she was going that she had no idea of how to solve the problem. In the process, she made a number of changes to my settings including she checked the "Leave mail on server" box. She concluded by telling me to take my computer to a computer shop. When she gave my mailer back to me it would not send or receive so I had to restore my settings to the way I had them before she screwed them up.

As an aside, I have found when overseas, that when I log on to some ISPs to access my Xtra mail account, I have had to change the SMTP setting from "smtp" to "send".

How do I prepare my Eudora mailer for the switch over to having to have the setting "send.xtra.co.nz" from 30 September?

I feel your pain.

I was a Eudora user for over 12 years but I have always used the free one.
With the setting changes made by Spark sometime back to make email more secure, I couldnt use Eudora because it doesn't allow the new settings.

So very reluctantly I switched to Mozilla Thunderbird.

Thunderbird allows you to copy your contact email addresses from Eudora.
I dont know if it allows you to copy over the old emails that are on Eudora in a straight forward manner.
Maybe someone else might be able to shed some light into this.

Give Thunderbird a try.   I found it was one of the better ones that are free , in my quest for a replacement client.
I still keep  Eudora just in case there is an email that I might want to look at or an old email address.

I use the Spark website from work or at a different computer for a quick look and reply to emails,
and only use Thunderbird when I am on the home computer.  Thunderbird is set to delete from server.

Good luck.

I just checked my copy of Thunderbird and the import function says that it supports mail from Eudora.  It worked perfectly for me when I dumped Outlook Express around 3 years ago.  More than 10 years worth of email folders were imported without a hitch, along with all my contacts and account settings.

I know it's a pain switching email clients, but when you realise how good Thunderbird is, you'll wonder why you waited so long.

Eudora should support SSL, so you need
SMTP Server: send.xtra.co.nz
Secure Sockets when Sending: Required, Alternate Port
Authentication Allowed: True

People still use Eudora? How about Pegasus?

I used to be the same way with Netscape. Used it since first being on Xtra dialup in 1996. By 2003 it was slow, buggy, unreliable...I forced myself to move to Mozilla Firefox and haven't looked back since.
Make the move, you won't regret (you could even run the two side-by-side for a while if you like).

Thank you Inphinity so much. Those simple instructions appear to have solved the problem. Eudora now sends with the SMTP setting to "send.xtra.co nz". Again - thanks.
