I am in total shock and denial, having just been told by Telecom that a broadband connection is not available in Laingholm - 4 minutes drive from Titirangi.

Before deciding to move to our Laingholm house I contacted Telecom to check if a BB connection was available. They allocated a telephone number and a couple of hours later called me to say that a BB connection was available, and they set up a job order to have it connected on 10 August. Today, while I was at home happily packing our possessions I received a voice mail from a Telecom contractor to the effect that a BB connection was not available after all, and to call 123

This I did, and after three attempts to negotiate the incredibly irritating voice recognition system (who on earth thought of that ?) I got to a BB consultant who said there is no BB, never was, and may never be ! He suggested I rent another landline and use dialup.

I have read the blog about another unfortunate user who has moved to Laingholm in similar circumstances - except that I checked with them first.

I do a lot of work from home. Does anyone know the best way to get a fast connection ? Do Telstra Clear do Satellite in NZ ?

Forget TelstraClear, they won't be of any help to you in Titirangi. Your best bet is to use the IPStar Satellite Broadband service. There is one proviso:

* You must have a clear view to the Western Horizon (hopefully that won't be a problem).

Wireless Nation is the most economical way to access IPStar:

Speeds are pretty decent too, starting at 1Mbps down and working up from there.

Thank you. I'll check it out. As it stands I won't be able to collect email unless I install a dailup.

What about Mobile Data? If you are in a 3G coverage of either Telecom or Vodafone this may be a good alternative to fixedline broadband.

For example Telecom and Vodafone offer 200MB and 1GB plans, that will automaticaly double the included usage for a further $10/month.

200MB plans are from $29.99, 1GB plans from $49.99 (excluding $10 for doubling your data limit, and based on 24month pricing).

Vodafone also offer a 3gig plan for about $70 and if you go over 3gig you get another 3gig for $10

Telecom may also offer this now so check on there website

Hi Rchurchman,

Send me a PM with your address details. I've done a lot of work with other clients in Laingholm to get them on broadband. It is a tricky area due to distance and other line issues. There is not much alternatives either, Vodafone coverage is very patchy too, so that will probably rule out 3G.
