My motherinlaw has her internet connection with telecom soon to be Spark but still uses a Clear email address she likes so has now received one of the letters advising her to change her smtp server. Today i tried with both the suggested smtp.clear.net.nz and send.xtra.co.nz
BOTH resulted in an error message and we were unable to send an email. Does anyone know what i'm missing ?

Spark block port 25.

So change your outbound email setting to TLS port 587 and this should work. ( you might need to tick the outbound server requires Authentication )

If i recall clear do not support SSL port 465

Cheers
John

You can opt-out of Port 25 blocking, but it's highly recommended you keep it. http://www.spark.co.nz/port25

As has already been said.. you can whitelist your own email address for outbound emails via the Yahoo portal and use send.xtra.co.nz for outbound emails.
