Hi,
I have been playing Counter Strike Global Offensive recently and sometimes every afternoon and evening i reach pings of up to 500 and then it would go down to 40 and then back up and so on. Would my connection be causing this? This problem is starting to annoy me as the game becomes unplayable.

Post Line Stats from your modem. Also make sure you're not on WiFi.

Stats look a little low but not that it would have much effect anyway.

Are you running any downloads at all?
Also try tracert in CMD when the ping spikes do happen. Could be a hop you're going through or downloads saturating your connection.

it sounds possibly like some form of congestion.

maybe a program in the background syncing or autoupdating.

Im on vdsl, to competitive servers, i average 29~30ms, and late at night it can get as low as 25ms. no jittering at all.

one thing worth considering is your boarderline for vdsl, you might want to consider switching to vdsl. - Must make it absolutely clear however, vdsl will always have a slightly higher latency than adsl due to the fact that interleaving is enabled on all profiles with no option to disable it.
While this could mean a higher minimum latency, your connection would handle concurrent usage alot better.

i just noted something which i didnt comment on before.

in your title you say your connection is only 5mbit, yet the stats clearly state your connected at 12/1mbit.

Where does this 5mbit value come from? did you mean 500ms?

About 80% of the time my download speed is around 1-8mbps down and i rarely ever get over 10mbps down. (I all tested this on ookla speedtest)
I will have to consider upgrading to vdsl.

I will have to consider upgrading to vdsl.

Your speedtest results should be around 10Mbps 24/7 to any local server. If they're not, the first thing is to start looking at what's happening on your internal network.

One thing that's very common now is people coming on here posting about speed issues, when the root cause is being on unlimited plans and leaving torrents seeding which saturates your upstream, which in turn affects your downstream speed.
