Hey there,

Just curious if anyone out there has any thoughts, or possibly some inside knowledge.

Went from ADSL2+ to 30/10 naked UFB about a couple of weeks ago. Domestic install out by the airport. on 150GB not unlimited.

Initially I was assuming that the connection profile hadn't been updated from my old connection to the new one, but after about 3 days and 12 phone calls to the world beating spark "helpdesk" i am assured this is not the case.

If I run Spark's speedtest (to CHCH server) between about 4p - 12a pretty much any day I'll get something like 8 - 13Mb/s down and 9Mb/s up, this can go down to 6 - 7 Mb/s at times... If I run it early in the morning or afternoon it's generally 28ish Down, 10ish up.

Using standard spark / enable Huawei gear for domestic connection.

Is this just another massive oversubscription issue, or should I spend another few days on the phone to the helpdesk ??

I understand that international bandwidth is not going to be anything like full speed of the connection, but surely the average speed to the local chch server should be pretty good most of the time ??

Thoughts / querys / comments ??

EDIT: speed tests are one device plugged directly into the modem.

Hey there,

Wired, direct to the modem with no other devices connected, and no obvious traffic generators running on my test device.

Here's the skinny. We have an issue with speeds with our CH UFB at the moment. A resolution is in the works. I'll have a chat tomorrow with the team and find out how far it is away. I know that we've had some complications that have slowed the resolution. Let me see what I can find out.

An update: we're nearly there.  We have a meeting scheduled with Enable today to schedule in the remedial actions to fix this issue.
At this stage I can't make any commitments as to when we will see full restoration of speeds.  It is being treated with utmost urgency, so my personal hope is that we will have this nailed in the next few days.  Rest assured, we are working on this!

UFB certainly makes a bit more work for the ISPs, not only having to have equipment in each region but also having to know the intricacies of the four fibre companies!

Sure does, especially with different traffic policing policies in place as well.

Just sounds like someone is going to get it at the next capacity planning meeting.

Just as an FYI, this augmentation has been under action for a number of months, so it is not something we just started on a few days ago.
It normally does not take this long, that's just a reflection of some of the issues that we have had with this particular augmentation.

It is looking highly likely that we will have this sorted this week, so not long now.

Update: some bad news.  We've had a small hickup and our slot to get this sorted looks like it has been bumped until early next week unfortunately.
We are estimating that you should see improvements on Tuesday night, and full restoration possibly by Wednesday night.
At this stage, that is still subject to change.

Hi

I'm having similar issues here in Chch. Primarily in peak time. Looking forward to the fix early next week. I have logged a call (out of core hours) but no one has actually rung me to discuss...

Hopefully it's resolved by Wednesday. I'll follow up with Spark then.

Cheers

Update: if you live in Hornby, then any peak time speed issues should now be a thing of the past.

If you live in Papanui you'll probably notice a session kick after midnight tomorrow night (between mid-night and 1am Thursday morning), after which time your speed issues should be gone.  Realistically you won't notice the improvement until Thurs night as midnight is off peak.  Everyone else may note a small to moderate increase in speed in Thurs evening, but won't get the full speed increase until Friday night.
