Hi, ever since we got VDSL installed the Internet has been horrible. Slow, dropping connection, wifi is terrible and our MS in games has increased by a lot and the connection isn't steady enough to even play games let alone browse the net.

I contacted spark and they said the first 10 days will be like that but it's been over 2 weeks and it just seems to be getting worse, it's hard to justify paying this much for such bad connection and service.

Maybe someone can help figure this out with me?
Cheers

where is peter reader when you need him

Do you have a master filter and dedicated vdsl jackpoint installed?
are you connected to the modem via Ethernet or wifi? always do any testing over Ethernet
poor wifi has nothing to do with the vdsl connection

please read the below and answer the questions then we might have the required info to be able to help you
PeterReader: Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router
- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing
- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan
- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)
- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)
- Your general location (or street)
- If you are rural or urban
- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service
- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)
- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

I don't know much about this stuff, but when the man came and installed it he did change a jack point, we used to use a splitter into the phone line and now it has 2 slots in the jackpoint. One for the phone and one for the VDSL.

The Ethernet seems to work fine but our wifi has gone from good to absolutely horrible after this installation.

Also the Internet light and wifi light and LAN light are constantly blinking all the time, shouldn't the Internet one be solid?

I just don't get how the wifi has got so terrible as soon as they upgraded us and installed the VDSL, the connection is constantly dropping and the signal has got twice as bad.

You need to provide a lot more information - essentially what is asked above. Without that it's impossible to help you.

WiFi is not a replacement for Ethernet, it's a convenient complementary solution. If you WiFi is poor you need to go through the usual steps of fault finding a WiFi connection.

unless you provide us with more information how do you expect us to help you?

we need sync speeds from the modem so we can compare them to a ethernet speedtest
we need attenuation figures to work out if the speed you are getting is what you should be getting (approximately)

if your ethernet speeds are good but your wifi speeds are poor, how is it an issue with the VDSL? its a wifi problem

be we dont know that yet because you havent provided any useful information

the lights flash because there is activity on the connection, this is normal

If it's the wifi that's crap and ethernet is still ok, then this is probably your problem.  I'm guessing you got a new modem as part of the upgrade. It may be setup on a different channel, and you may be getting a lot of interference from neighbours, etc. There are plenty of posts detailing wifi troubleshooting if you search; I'd start there.

You could start by telling us what sort of modem you have, then we could tell you how to log in to it so you can grab data from it and tell you how to change the WiFi channel etc

What brand modem do you have? This will help us direct you to the correct page with the info we need.

Just remember we are here to help but you need to give us as much info as possible to help us help you

Others have covered your wireless issues pretty well.

As for your latency, VDSL uses DLM to try to manage your line profile for a balance between best performance and stability, One factor which is changed to achieve this is your interleaving profile.

For gaming, you really want to stick to holding a DLM-1 profile, however short of having a clean line (which it sounds like you likely do have by your description of the jackpoint installation) and simply leaving the router to do its job, not rebooting or turning it off if at all possible There is nothing You nor Spark can do to control this.

Often you will get a better experience for keeping latency low over fiber or adsl (With interleaving off and assuming no upstream congestion)

Try to take note of what happens when a disconnection and/or slowness occurs, is it seen on all Devices? Only wireless devices? only particular wireless devices?

HUAWEI HG630b, I wouldn't of thought the wifi would get worse when upgrading to a better modem though? I know it's probably not set up correctly but there's so many things to change that if have no idea.

Here are a bunch of guides, change the WiFi as per the guide etc and then come back if any other problems

I would never class the Huawei as an upgrade....

However changing modems even to a bigger and better model can make your speeds worse if they aren't set up properly. Best bet is to follow the link above and do a wifi sniffer test to see who else in your neighborhood is on the same channel.

And to scan the WiFi channels that are in use, download this program here

log into your modem and post up the DSL connection information

just go through the menus till you find the information we are asking for, its pretty easy

also post up a speedtest using ethernet and also one via wifi

lastly use a program like INSSIDER http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html
that will tell you what WIFI channel you are on and also sinff out other wifi in your area, you goal is to put your wifi network onto the least busy channel of either 1, 6 or 11.
