Hi, I plan to apply my fiber braodband from Bigpipe, as I go through the package details. Found that modem will not supply "You will need to get your own UFB compatible modem."

I check with Noel Leeming and Dick Smith, but no one can recommand the modem to me. Plus I don't see any modem in the market come with fiber port. Is there any idea what exactly I need to purchase my own? is ADSL2+ Modem Router compatible?

There is no such thing as a fibre modem, you need a router.

Hi there,
When you get Fiber you have a box installed on your wall called an ONT. The Fiber goes into this, then there is a normal network plug that you plug in to your router.

So ADSL2/VDSL routers don't work as they have a phone (rj11 socket) - but there are lots of routers that do.

Not sure if BigPipe requires VLAN tagging and PPPoE (like Spark) - someone will be able to advise below I'd say.

default is without but you can ask to have the connection tagged

Correct, which means pretty much any router will work that isn't a complete piece of trash.

However, you do need to spend a little bit to get something that is good enough to cope with 100Mbps+ speeds.

something like the Asus RT52U is fine for around the $150 mark

You're looking for a router with a WAN (Wide Area Network) port. The ONT acts like a dumb modem, only supplying the internet connection, and the router does all the heavy lifting with a PPPoE configuration.

Cheapest ASUS with a gig wan port works great for my cousins. Was no point getting one with AC wireless etc as they have it in a cupboard and have other wifi in the house, gets 207 meg both ways on speed tests to wired. about 120 to my cellphone on its 5GHz wifi. and about 14 to a laptop on the 2.4GHz wifi.

Just to follow up on the post. I've purchased D-Link DSL-2877AL Dual Band Wireless-AC750(300+433Mbps) ADSL/VDSL/UFB Modem Router but still awaiting fiber connection due to building structure that block the fiber installation from the point to my unit. Anyway, bigpipe promised to provide ADSL as alternative solution before they figure out how to install the fiber to my house.

If you can take it back to the store, please do it. Get any one of the devices mentioned in this thread, don't get this one. (Speaking from experience.)

I bought an Asus AC3200 (https://www.asus.com/nz/Networking/RTAC3200/) to replace my Airport Extreme and doubled the bandwidth to the other end of the house. Not the cheapest but I had my last router for 10 years ;)

edit: The bedroom is the other end of a 5 bedroom, 2 storey house with 4 walls and a stairway between the router and laptop.

I hope OP is ok with me hijacking his/her thread but my question is related and may be of help. :)

I've signed up to BigPipe UFB Elite (200Mbps/200Mbps) and have my Chorus scope and installation dates set. My dilemma lies with choosing a router between 3, supposedly great, options.

1. Netgear R8000
2. Asus RT-AC68U
3. Linksys WRT1900AC

I don't want to spend over $350 and have read quite a few reviews on the three above but I'm still finding making a decision difficult. I'm hoping perhaps another BigPipe customer may have used one of the routers I listed and have an opinion on how well/poorly it works? Or another router in the same price range ($300-350) and has some advice?

Any comments and opinions are appreciated.

I'd say not the linksys after hearing a friend's issues with it.

If wifi performance isn't a big deal for you then the cheaper as uses will do fine on a 200/200 fiber connection. 208 both ways on a wired device and just over 100 on its 5ghz wifi. (Rt 56)

If your devices only have 2.4ghz wifi then no point getting a flash AC one right now.

id go for the asus as their firmware is pretty stella.

I have the asus ac66u and I use alot of the features in the firmware and it works flawlessly.

netgear would be my second option, they are also pretty okay.
