Recently I bought a Okta Mondo, and dont get me wrong, its a great phone but there are a few issues that I'd like help with.
1. The media player sucks. Does anyone know of an alternative that I can install?

2. Sim card. ??? When I change to GSM mode it says there is no service BUT the service bar shows service (amount depends on location) and flashes. Do I have to have the sim card activated or something? It came with a flashy telecom infomation guide that didn't say anything useful.

3. Can I put a vodafone sim card in? Or will the phone have to be unlocked first?

4. World Mode. Can I use the sim in New Zealand and pay normal charges (eg, not roaming charges) ?

Any help would be much appreciated.

It looks like Telecom dealers are failing to send the message across...

The GSM part of the phone is only used when roaming overseas. It is not intended for use within New Zealand - not yet. It won't work on Vodafone New Zealand's network and it won't work with a Vodafone SIM card unless you unlock th phone somehow.

No, Telecom hasn't told me jack about what World Mode does, and like I said, the booklet is useless.
Anyway, thanks for answering one on the questions but now I have one more... How do I unlock the phone? Preferably without screwing it

This information will not be posted here as it is intellectual property of Telecom New Zealand. It also begs the question why would you want to, with only basic features available through GSM?

Worldmode is enabling you to use your Telecom phone in countries that Telecom does not have a CDMA roaming partner. Basically it enables Telecom Mobile customer to roam to an increased number of countries without the need for a loan phone.

Hello,

As the others have said, the Okta Mondo (or any other 'worldmode' device) has a GSM radio that is intended for roaming overseas, rather than domestic use.

The reason why you do get some 'signal', but it flicks into SOS mode is that you are picking up the Vodafone NZ network, but the worldmode sim (that is supplied) is not used with Vodafone NZ. 111/112 calls will still be accepted by the Vodafone network from memory.

CDMA is all you need to use in NZ, so really the GSM component is quite useless here, its only useful overseas.

About the SIM card, we 'girls' at our little shop thought they were already activated, but it turns out you have to ring *22800 which downloads the latest roaming software, and gives you all sorts of handy info, and there is now an option to press ...(Whatever, sorry, it's late) and you are put through to the roaming helpdesk to activate your SIM card.  Which is what we discovered when we did our latest training!!!

Or Alternativley, go to http://telecom.co.nz/business/sim.html and submit the form to have the card activated.

You will however need the following details.

Mobile Number
SIM Number
Account Number
Account Holder Name

I think all the other questions have pretty much been answered, but I dont think there is another media player.  I have not had much time to play around with the Mondo, but i think it uses an OS of its own, so even finding custom software for the Mondo could be a rare thing.
