One of the reasons I signed up with BigPipe for UFB was that I had read on geekzone that they offered free public ips (On request) as opposed to the CG-NAT solution.

 

I'm experiencing very poor performance on iplayer and ITV hub and most other overseas streaming services.

 

I emailed BigPipe and requested a public ip but they told me they do not provide them and the only option is a static ip address. I'm happy to pay for a static IP if I know for certain it will improve performance, but don't want to pay upfront if it doesn't work and I end up changing providers.

 

Was I told right and the policy has been changed or is there still a way to request a public ip?

A static ip is also public. They did originally also offer public dynamic ip but not any more.
Don't know if this will help the issues you're having though.

Just bite the bullet and get a static IP address - Bigpipe charge a very reasonable one-off $45 for it (compared to some ISPs that charge up to $15 per month forever).

 

I have bigpipe UFB and a static IP - Those services you mention work fine.

 

That said - you dont have to have a static IP address for streaming - I am not sure it should make a lot of difference.

 

What unblocker are you using - are you sure there isnt an issue with the unblocker?

 

Also - are you accessing these services over wifi - do they work opn a cable connection to your router (ie is your wifi being the issue).

 

 

 

EDIT: Not sure what usage is going on at your place - but maybe install the android app and make sure streaming is given priority. While it shouldn't generally make much difference on a high speed UFB connection , if you have other people trashing the internet with different activities maybe it might help you.

Have been using Getflix for unblocking had zero problems on Vodafone VSDL. Will try sign up with a free trial of a different unblocker and see if that could be contributing, would be quite some coincidence however.  

 

Same issue on Wifi and ethernet connection and on Windows, Mac, smart TV and Roku.

 

Only thing that partly works is connecting to a VPN first.

 

No other usage of the internet at the time and not exactly peak time for morning Euro matches etc.

1) we haven't offered free public IP on request for around 2 years now.  I thought all the old threads on geekzone had been updated to reflect that, but it would be great if you could point out where you read about it so we can correct it. 

 

 

 

2) the problems you are having sound like they are totally unrelated to CGNAT.  Streaming services work just fine over CGNAT no issues , and getting a public IP or static IP is very unlikely to make a difference.  If you want though, we'd refund the static IP (and take it away) if you try it out and find you don't need it within a reasonable amount of time (say, less than 7 days).  If you decide to do that, just link whoever you are dealing with in our team to this post.

 

 

 

3) have you tried troubleshooting other parts of your connection to see if that helps e.g. make sure it isn't wifi, make sure you don't have other traffic running at the same time, etc - if you haven't already, download our app and that gives you a visualisation of the last 5 minutes of traffic over your connection, so you'll be able to see if, say, somebody else in your house is maxing out your line with torrenting or something without you realising. you can also prioritise streaming traffic (although using a VPN won't do this since a VPN hides the traffic type

 

 

 

4) also try streaming stuff without using the unblocker (i.e. youtube, netflix Nz etc).  If those work fine, it suggests an issue with the unblocker itself.  unblocking services make changes all the time i the way they operate (they have to try and stay ahead of Netflix etc) so it's quite possible something in their service has changed since you switched from Vodafone.

Possibly true I didn't say I had a problem with streaming services in general just UK based ones like iplayer, itvhub. Thanks for offering the option of refund on the static ip if it doesn't help.

Yes, see my reply above. I'll download the app but there are only two of us and no one was using the net at all at the time of the issues.

Streaming youtube, netflix nz (fast.com reports about 80 mbps) works fine. Although occasionally get buffering on netflix nz which never happened on VDSL.

 

I'll try a different unblocker and get back to you.

@mattz the above works 100% fine on my BigPipe connection w/ dns4me and a static IP.

Streaming with an unblocker can be quite unreliable without a public IP as they see your IP change and will deny it till you log in and update it again, and also others may hit that service from the same IP as you who have set it to a different zone for whatever.

I, like you, had challenges when I moved to BigPipe, which I hadn't had with a previous ISP, did the usual amount of Googling, and decided I needed a Static IP, got one, and things are working. Initially, there were a couple more things I changed, before I tested the service (Plex) so I can't be certain which fixed it. 

 

But I don't feel I've lost much from moving to a Static IP anyhow. It made life a bit easier when I was using unblocking services at least.
