What with free lightbox, netflix for 1 year etc, the current Spark offer is tempting me to move from Vodafone. Any quick thoughts on Spark's service?

none of the big players seem to feature in 'best of' lists but I can save a bit on our streaming services this way for a while.

any horror stories switching form VF to Spark? I use DNS4me and presume that's as easy to access admin settings with the Spark provided router?

We are in the process of doing this now, its poor service / order quality checking that has pushed us to move so finally want to free of Vodafone.

I had to explain to the Spark rep a couple of times our line is actually connected to Vodafone's own POTS network (Cable/FibreX network) so will see later next week how they get on getting chorus out to re-jumper our copper back the Chorus copper network. Unfortunately we still have around a 18 month wait for fibre where we are currently living.

Interestingly they are still handing out Huawei HG630b routers for VDSL which doesn't support 5ghz wifi so I'll put my own one in to get around that.

I work for Spark, disclosure. The common theme with this question over the years is it is a good move.

I'm a bit surprised we still send out 630's, maybe thats for capped or ADSL connections? I am not sure of that till Monday :-) Maybe others can elaborate

I would of thought they would be handing out a router that can do 5ghz by now.

Can't really comment on that one.

I personally don't see a purpose of the 630 at all (ok it is cheaper but still..)

I'll happily hand out a 531s however, It took a surprising beating from me so i can't complain about what it can pump out and for those low volume customers were switching to Wireless or fibre isn't really an ideal upgrade path (think elderly customers)

For fibre it's the hg659b.
To buy it out right it's $199, plus $14.95 delivery.

You could ring them and say you only interested if it's that one, (as for VDSL it looks like the free one is model below that one) they might discount the price.
They knocked $50 off a $100 modem for me once.
I haven't tried playing with DNS settings in it, but on my fibre 100/20 can do full speed on wifi devices that do 5ghz and ac.

I've got a Fritzbox I'm going to use, it does everything I need and the 5ghz wifi on it is great.
