Hey guys, I’m sorry if this has been asked a million times — I’ve looked all over and can’t seem to find any solution.

We have changed our current plan to fibre max four weeks ago and we’re not getting the right speed. We have the nighthawk d7800. Currently we’re getting around 200mbps download speed on both lan and wireless. I have tried testing the speed on several devices; windows laptop, MacBook,iPhones, Samsung, ps4 etc. Am I missing something? Or is there a guide that I’m supposed to be following or has been missed?

Have you checked with Spark that your connection is on the correct profile for getting up to 1Gbp/s?

Sounds like it's on 200Mbp/s

Hey Linux, thanks for the reply. And yes haha I’ve talked to spark and even they don’t know what’s going on. I’ve provided them screenshots and whatnot. We’ve been trying to sort it for four weeks now but still nothing. That’s why I thought maybe I could ask someone else. They said, on their system we should be getting 1000mbps. Am I missing something?

What speed do you get when you use the Spark HG659b router?

Many non RSP supplied 3rd party routers out there simply incapable of routing at Gigabit speed.

Have you got the Spark supplied access point and have you tried that for testing?

i suspect your router is the issue. it cant handle the PPPoE connection

have you tired using the speedtest app in windows as opposed to the browser based ones? have you tried using a bootable linix USB and testing in there. theses are both better/more accurate ways of testing

is your router on the latest firmware?

have you tried connecting a PC directly to the ONT and running an PPPoE dialer in windows to establish the connection and then see what speeds your getting?

sadly even though you have brought a great "gaming" router they more often than not suck at wan to lan throughput when you add in things like PPPoE and VLAN to the mix. they are nomally fine with out, the benchmark i have seen shows 780mbps raw performance want to lan and lan to wan so still well short of gigabit.

dont buy into the hype and buy these things, get a solid router only and grab a couple of access points.

Many Netgear routers haven't been optimised to do full speed with PPPoE.

Suggest you see if there is a firmware update for your router - for some of them (such as the one the Spark sells) there is updated firmware that unlocks their full speed.

This assumes of course that everything else in your ecosystem is fast enough to support the full fibre max speeds.

Hey guys thanks so much for all the replies.

Yes, we do have the spark provided router, but it’s really inconsistent. Like it would drop certain devices when there are 8-9 devices connected. Also I know it would slow down the more devices are connected to it. But it does give a solid 500mbps to one device. Also the range is quite short in terms of wifi connectivity.

What modem/router do you guys recommend? Also is there no fix to this in regards to using my Netgear modem?

Your Netgear router is incapable of routing at Gigabit speed.

If you're happy with the Netgear you'll just have to put up with what you have at present, which in the real world will have pretty much zero impact on your day to day Internet experience.

Totally unrelated issue. The HG659b has great Gigabit performance, I suggest you start a few thread since this thread is not related to the HG659b

This is your device, not the HG659... The HG659 is able to route Gigabit without breaking a sweat.

@thejasperchan Your router is the problem here. Just go back to the HG659. If you're wanting better WiFi then look at the Ubiquiti AmpliFi.
