Hi All

I've just swapped our old ADSL2 connection for spark 4G (we are in a rural area). We have a Huawei B168S-65D 4G router.

Previously, I had a Draytek Vigor 130 and a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 5. The DrayTek was in bridge mode with the Ubiquiti using pppoe. This worked very well despite the 2Mbit blazing speed.

Does anyone have experience with setting up the 4G router in bridge mode (modem only)? Is it possible? I gave up after an hour and I'm now using it as modem and router with the EdgeRouter sitting idle. Ideally, I would like to replicate my old setup.

Any help would be great.

So under your old setup was the public IP on your EdgeRouter? if that is what you are trying to Achieve 4G its not possible I am afraid

apologies - pppoe was not correct. It was pppoa. See below. I'm not too savvy on all this stuff by the way.

All I would like to do is use the ER for DHCP and general routing/firewall duties whilst using the Huawei just for internet. I've always had wierd issues with things not working when using ISP provided routers (like not being able to see any of the chromecasts around the house as soon as we switched over to the Huawei this morning...).

Hi, so as you are now behind CG-NAT any inbound portforwards aint going to work, however I can definitely see merit in making the most of your USG, ie DHCP, intra lan routing and firewalling etc.

So if it were me I would create a transport network between the Huawai router and the USG, using the existing 192.168.1.0/24 is fine assuming its not what you want to use on your inside networks. Then turn NAT on the USG off and put a static route on the Huawai pointing back to the USG, this will now leave the Huawai to simply providing modem function and NAT, other than that its just a basic forwarding router. You also remove the 3rd NAT in your chain (CG-NAT=1, Huawai=2)

Thanks for the reply. I think what you have described is what I was aiming for. The existing network is on the .10 subnet so putting the Huawei back on .1 (where the DrayTek used to be) should be no problem.

I need to read up on NATs and the config process for the edgerouter. I have forgotten eveything about it since I've not touched it for over a year!

Well port forwards can work just set the DMZ to point to your USG.

Acts like a standard Fixed line connection once enabled, It's how people are able to do things like stick a mail server behind it (not that i'd recommend that)

Correct. It won't terminate on the correct network.

Update: I now have my Ubiquit EdgeRouter up and running. Spark modem: 192.168.1.x no WiFi, no DHCP. Main network: 192.168.10.x and WiFI via 2 x Unify Pro APs.

All seems to be working well. I currently have the firewall enabled on both routers but this doesn't seem to be causing any issues so far.
