Hi all,
I'm in Auckland and apparently have an ADSL2+ wireless modem and phoneline.

I'm wanting to shift from Maxnet. I'm using about 30 GB to 35 GB a month and am getting slapped with huge excess data charges. Wasn't originally using this much, but have another laptop in the house now. I'm looking for a plan which is max $80. Download speed is more important than upload, so don't mind a FS down / 128k up service. I was looking at Xnet (and even signed up tonight, but will cancel in the morning) but have read some bad things about their speeds. How is Telecom these days? I haven't used them for about 18 months and at that time was on that unlimited plan that was just a mess. Their current Pro plan sounds like it will fit the bill perfectly.

Just before I start I will issue a disclaimer that I am 100% biast when it comes to Telecom

Just so you are aware a FS/128k service will actually result in your download speed being limited to about 4500kbps, so you are best to choose a FS/FS service if your download speeds matters to you (of course distance to the exchange is still a limiting factor). Can you post your current stats from your existing ADSL connection?

Speed wise, and you can check the forums on this, Telecom are rated quite well (along with other larger providers). They also provide a included Wireless modem when you sign up for 12months on a 3GB or higher plan, which is nice is you need a router.

If you use customer service more often (i.e. for business) then you might want to check out Telecom's Business plans (consumers can get these also). They do however have a 24 month contract, but can offer higher data caps if required with a much lower excess usage rate and dedicated support line during business hours with an included 2wire gateway.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

The overusage on the Business plans is a lot cheaper as well, which is why I use them myself. $2.67/GB on the Business Advanced compared to $20/GB on the Residential plans.

Details here. Only thing you may not like is the 24 month contract, although it doesn't cost a lot to break it and you still keep the 2wire modem which by itself is probably worth a couple of hundred bucks.
