hey guys, ive been checking out all the details for the new networks by vodafone and telecom, and think ive got a great idea for buying a fone with support for both networks (sorry if sum1 else thought of this, i thoght of it myself).
my understanding is that telcom will use w-cdma 850/2100 mhz. 850mhz being for %97 of nz, 2100mhz only in main centres of nz. no gsm backing right??
Vodafone currently use gsm 900/1800 mhz. have a 2100mhz w-cdma in some parts of nz, and have a 900mhz w-cdma planned.

so if all of that is correct then an ideal choice for multinetwork choice would be a fone which supports 900/1800 mhz gsm for vodafone use all over nz (pretty much), and 850/2100 mhz w-cdmz for telecom use all over nz (pretty much) and 2100 mhz support for main centres (increased performence maybe, unsure of that but it allows vodafones network to be used when in a big city).

im sure this wouldnt work for every1 but it seems a gud idea to me, for my requirements=a fone that an use both networks and i prefer telecom as a mobile provider all round, but itd be nice not to be locked in2 1 or the other (and i like flash stuff hehe). im currently looking at a nokia 6120. any other ideas or did i get sumfing wrong??

Telecom will operate a WCDMA network in the 850 & 2100 bands alongside the existing CDMA network.

Vodafone operate a GSM/GPRS/WCDMA network in the 900, 1800 (GSM) & 900, 2100 (WCDMA) bands.

As Vodafone plan to have nationwide WCDMA coverage (primarily through the use of the 900Mhz WCDMA band), most users would like a phone that supports 850, 900 & 2100 WCDMA in addition to any other GSM bands for roaming. Unfortunately no such phone exists. Yet. At least for now.

yeh i get that. still isnt that a good idea for budget consious ppl (like me) who want both networks in 97% of nz. i get that not having 900 mhz w-cdma will limit the use of vodafone 3g features outside of city-like areas, but getting a phone with 900 mhz w-cdma eliminates any telecom services outside of citylike areas due to the lack of a nation wide gsm network. so wat im asking is would this actually work with a mobile . another thing that has come to my attention is things like software on the mobile. would buying a handset from telecom with the frequencies i speak of work on the vodafone network, or is some sort of software exchange needed on the handset itself to allow the mobile to use both networks to their full usage, when in a 3g service zone??
i read somewhere that telecom and vodafone have agreed not to lock phones so that shudnt be an issue

As long has the phone has 900Mhz GSM then it will work on VFNZ. Ideally you would want 850/2100 WCDMA and at least dual band 900/1800 Mhz GSM, althrough alot of phone's have quadband 850,900,1800,1900 Mhz GSM.

Just be aware that relying on GSM coverage from Vodafone will mean your handset won't work everywhere Vodafone have coverage. There are now places (and I can even give examples of suburbs in Wellington such as Houghton Bay for example) that only have 2100MHz 3G coverage. There is no GSM coverage.

While Vodafone are still deploying GSM sites most infill in the cities is now all 3G and I'd pick that a lot of future expansion within the next coupkle of years may be 900 3G rather than both 900 GSM + 900 3G.

rite well that clears that up then. thanks for the help guys ill have to decide when purchusing whether to go 1 way or another or a cheapshot attempt at both hehe.
