had to use a nokia e71 in germany and had trouble connecting to a network.
Though Telecom says that its automatically set up, i dint expect that i would had a hard time send text!

Three of us went to LA at the end of last month and nothing but troubles. Calls, SMS, emails (BlackBerry Bold) would come and go. Many, many calls to the helpdesk and they simply asked for our exact address each time.

Note that when using a mobile phone overseas you are connected to the roaming network - not Telecom New Zealand. If there's problem overseas you can't blame Telecom directly.

I had no problem using a Telecom SIM card while roaming overseas.

Well of course we're not on the Telecom NZ network -- otherwise it wouldn't be roaming, would it?

I hate to use the line, BUT, we never had an issue with Vodafone. TNZ are selling a service as having incredible roaming ability and I couldn't receive calls.

What networks were you folks using in Germany and in LAX?

XT works fine overseas however I would suggest that people ensure there phone is in dual mode GSM/UMTS. I have heard of a couple of irate corporates in England who had a really crap coverage experience, turned out that they had UMTS only selected.... DA that means only 3G in UK which unlike NZ is not in all areas of coverage.

Vodafones advantage in the past was the fact that all of its handsets where GSM predominantly so 2G was often default. Times have changed and with more 3G 900/2100 850/2100 UMTS devices on the market people will have limited understanding of how to make there phones work when 3G is not available.

I've heard plenty of rumors of issues with XT roaming. I mentioned that I was travelling overseas to somebody at Telecom and infact was offered a XT SIM by somebody at Telecom to bring away on holiday for some testing but nothing ended up happened in the end.

Telecom use a roaming hub for their roaming rather than direct interconnects like Vodafone do. They also use dual IMEI's on their SIM cards and you roam as an O2 customer on some foreign networks.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches - Vodafone's roaming does seem significantly more reliable and does offer better pricing. Telecom on the other hand offers a return path for voicemail on all roaming networks so you can receive Voicemail while roaming if your phone is switched on and not answered. If you are on Vodafone there is no return path except in Australia so calls will not divert to voicemail if not answered and will simply be cut off.

Vodafone also offer significantly more roaming networks than Telecom who don't have agreements with as many networks but do cover virtually all the same countries.

What are the countries, Voda has network agreement with, on a prepaid (with xt handset)?

All XT handsets will work on the Vodafone Network either 2G or limited 3G to the 2100mhz areas

On the Vodafone.co.nz website you can all prepay roaming countries

Few general tips

Make sure that your phone is set to:

Prefered Network mode: Automatic
Prefered Network Band: Automatic
Select Network: Automatic

for more info regarding romaing, can visit http://www.telecomroaming.co.nz/ ( this is a real handy website for people travelling) and check for the country you are travelling.
