Hi,

Does anyone know of a publicly available list that you can seach an exchange by Telecom land line number?

Or can anyone tell me what exchange 09 527 xxxx is linked to?

I have recently moved to Mt Wellington, Auckland, and have found out after a week and a half that Caller ID is unavailable on my exchange. Although another friend in Mt Wellington does have it, but has a different 09 5XX xxxx prefix.

Therefore my interest in what exchange I am actually on.

Hard to tell these days.

Although there is a fixed set of allocated numbering per exchange, with portability and expansion they can vary greatly.

There use to be the adsl2+ list which had the listings start, but thats since disappeared.

Best bet would be to use the adsl2+ maps to find your cabinet/location as it shows what the areas cover.
Works on street as apposed to number

If you are on the TMK/N (tamaki) cabinet, this will explain why you "can't" get caller ID, TMK exchange houses both a K/Kai and an E NEAX switch, the E switch is capable of Caller ID the K is not, you could get caller ID if you were willing to change your phone number and a tech would also need to rejumper you to feed from the E switch.

The reason you were put on the K switch in the first place is most likley that the old owner/tenant of the property were on the K so they have simply allocated a K number so they can liven the intact connection without sending a tech out.

Wow thanks matt45 for that great info! I chose the number prior to the move, and the tech did visit to connect broadband.

I suspect though to change switches, it may be a mission to explain to the Telecom call centre, and also incur a wiring charge due to the nature of the request? Although I would be happy to change numbers as it is only been just over a week, it just may not be worth it as I mention.

i am unsure if there would be any charge, but the "wiring" is just at the exch/cabinet rather than at the house. i think as long as you imply that you are changing number to get caller ID you should be ok.

A long time ago when I was connected to the crap birkdale exchange and wanted caller ID they had no problems processing the order for it to be moved to the slightly less crap exchange, and their tech even called me before changing it over to let me know it was happening.
