I have just recently changed my broadband plan from go large to big time. I got a Netgear DG834Gv5 router to support adsl2+. So I did a speedtest:

And this was slower than my previous connection so I thought something must be wrong.
So I went into the ADSL settings and changed the DSL mode from ADSL (multi-mode) to ADSL (G.DMT) and did another speedtest:

Shouldn't adsl2+ be better and faster?
Please help me
P.S I am a noob and don't know much about internet stuff.

The actual rate your modem will sync at get depends on your distance from the exchange and the quality of your line and house wiring (line noise and line attenuation) and a few other factors.

This graph from Internode (Aussie ISP) shows how distance from the exchange (aka line attenuation) affects the speed your modem will sync at

It's also worth noting you are not gauranteed to get the speed your modem syncs at when doing a speedtest or file download. This is because you share backhaul bandwidth with other customers on the same exchange back to your ISP's network. Your ISP also provides shared bandwidth for customers to local and international sources.

Basically residential grade internet is best effort shared network without any real gaurantees of performance or speed.

Is there any way too improve my connection apart from getting closer to the exchange?

Here is a picture of some of my router stats, the dsl is changed to adsl2+ and the down and upstream connections are slower than if the dsl is on adsl(D.GMT).
Is there anything to help my stats?

Have you upgraded your firmware? i would do that, or change router. I had similar issues with my netgear one, would sync at 7800 on ADSL1, 6500 on ADSL2 and then ADSL2+ wouldn't work at all :( also took ages to connect.

I ended up getting a worse modem, with even more problems, but managed to get it working by only leaving ADSL2/ADSL2+ ticked(rest on the hidden advanced config page were left hidden) you might need to telnet into the modem to get to this area.

Do you have any mates you can borrow a modem off?

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

You have a very high line attenuation. Either you are very very far from exchange, or your house wiring is very bad. Either way, you should get a central splitter installed.

Nah I don't have a router i can borrow thats adsl2+ compatible. I live in Lower Hutt, Normandale. This is the filter i have atm http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?item=MODDYN0900
Is that a central splitter?
I'm gona get some new cable to my phone line.
Should i also get a new filter that is adsl2+ compatible?

That is not a master/central splitter, it's simply a plug in filter.

A master splitter is fitted where the Telecom wiring comes into your house. Typuically you'll install a new cable run from this and install a new jackpoint that is ONLY for ADSL. It can't be used for voice.

All other jackpoints in the house are then usable for voice and no longer require plug filters like the ones you currently have.

Due to the wiring issues that exist in most older houses (including the large number of 3 wire installs) a master splitter is the recommended options to deliver the best ADSL results.

Again... $199 for splitter to be installed by Chorus tech. It used to be $149, not anymore :)

That also covers them fixing up the wiring to use the newer 2c sockets and a new socket for the adsl, and if needed changing the cables to the adsl socket for something better than the old grey stuff.
