I am having great difficulty getting any usable bandwidth on Bigtime when accessing newsgroups. Even straight text news servers are a huge issue. During peak (9am to 2am) they are totally unaccessable. Offpeak (2am to 9am) max speed I can get is about 70 kbps (bytes not bits). I can understand the concept of control but to throttle back so far in offpeak is just wrong and to completely deny access for 17 hours of the day is criminal. Anyone having similar problems or have any answers?

I suggest you call in and get your line etc checked out, there is absolutely zero restrictions outside the peak hours

Which usenet service? and which ports are you using?

I found a few ports that were pretty slow (563 which is NNTPS), but also found my provider supported the https port (443)

I also tried out Usenet on Bigtime, and although I am not a pro with Usenet/newsgroups, I found it very slow. I was using a free trial with giganews at the time..

I found that nearly everything I wanted to do on BigTime was slow.. and I'm not around to use it when its not peak. Eventually I caved and went to the 40GB plan.

I normally run mine slow at 130kbps. But if I let it go it uses my full rated speed (which is only in the order or 450kbps). Some days it doens't get above 200kbps during peak others it does.

Doesn't bother me much

hasl, this appears to be a very serious misconfiguration by Telecom. news.gmane.org is unusable. A minute to read a single message. Headers downloading at 0.1kB/s. Header downloads and messages continually aborting.

Telecom: http://gmane.org/ provides a vitally important gateway to thousands of completely legitimate mailing lists.

As does news.individual.net. I have subscribed to their exemplary service for years. Now they are unusable. http://news.individual.net/faq.php#1.3

I have access to two commercial usenet services, Airnews and Teranews.

I have found my off-peak problem is provider specific. Airnews is VERY slow whereas Teranews is fine. I am trying to find out from Airnews why that is.

So, my problem is really with peak times. Situation is that neither server provides any usable speed. I have tried the stock port of 119 and your recommended 563 and 443. None of them provide me with any usable speed. I get a connection ok no matter which port, the provider recognises my logon however all I get are intermittant spikes of data at no more than 1.5kb/s and for only a milli second every couple of seconds before it eventually times out. Same result with either service and whatever port I use.

I also have access to a private text-only provider for a special interest group. I do manage to download headers but have no success attempting to download any content.

Only time I can access any news provider is off-peak. Given I have to sleep that gives me about two hours of usable access. Pitiful

I would be very happy to have basic speed of say 30kb/s during off-peak. Hell even dialup is better than nothing but at the moment I get nothing.

Only way atm is ssl port 443 with 20+ connections at peak time. Then at most you can get 200kbps.
