I went to Telecom's website today, looking for some information. I clicked on Business and got a prompt on my display saying Telecom were trying to install name.dll on my PC.

What is this file and what gives Telecom the right to think that they can install software on my PC?

Telecom install attempt

I'd go on a Vegan diet but the delivery time from Vega is too long.

The NameCtrl Control, defined in the name.dll file, is an ActiveX control that allows a web page to display presence information for people allowing the user to take various actions with respect to those people through an on-object user interface in Windows SharePoint Services. This DLL is installed on the client computer during the Microsoft Office 2007 system setup

Basically you have office 2007 installed and you're accessing a page that's part of a sharepoint site. The site is asking to be able to use the features of office 2007 you have installed via the browser, they should probably turn that off for a public facing site..

I had that pop up with one of my own sites once. It's bad out-of-the-box behaviour from SharePoint but is fixable.

It's not trying to install, but run it. It's already in your system. I wouldn't get too worried about this one, but as said before someone is looking into it...

On the plus side, it's interesting that Sharepoint is being used for a public facing website, one of the weaknesses they are addressing with the new version is that it doesn't to public website stuff 'well'.

Sharepoint has been used on a lot of public websites... Flybus.co.nz is one example and probably the largest Sharepoint deployment in New Zealand. Other sites include a couple of .mil.nz domains I can't remember now.

Yes there are a lot of sadomasochist developers, with enough money you can make a square peg fit a round hole. To be fair Sharepoint has been improving each version, also to be fair it's still horrible and way too much work for a public facing site.
