Hi Folk,

My apologies if this is being discussed elsewhere.  The only blogs I could find that vaguely related were lacked because they had been inactive.

We have had pretty acceptable broadband performance (1600 or so and up to 2400) for months, but over the past month or so all of our browsers have been locking up. They are either not displaying the page (cycling endlessly) or taking a heck of a long time to do so.  I am also getting MS Outlook mail server (my own domain is based in the US somewhere) timeouts that I am sure are related.  I have gone through all the usual checks and had suspicions of what might be the cause, but am still hitting the proverbial head against a brick wall.  At the moment our house has the following:

-          Machines … desktop and two laptops, all different brands
-          Connections … two are currently internally wireless and one is wired, cat 6
-          Operating systems … XP on two and Linux on one
-          Browsers … Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome
-          The house is split for broadband at the entry point so has a dedicated line straight to the ADSL router

...so I figure it isn’t us.

Called Telecom.  They checked the lines and came back saying they are okay so want me to monitor the performance over the next three days.

However.  It occurred to me that two things happened around the time our troubles started:

 1. Our Sky phone line has been unplugged for months and only plugged back in the day they installed the new ‘My Sky’ unit.  I am pretty sure it is only used for ordering movies online so I wouldn’t have thought it would have an impact but will leave it unplugged and confirm that the Sky unit works normally without it.

2. Telecom introduced their TIVO TV service and since it downloads movies over broadband I was suspicious that such a service couldn’t possibly work over existing circuits.

I would be grateful to hear if anyone has any thoughts or knowledge on this.

Many thanks,

David

What type of ADSL modem/router do you have?

+1 on take a closer look at the router.

Before my RTA 1335 died, its ethernet ports' speed went down the gurgler, lots of symptoms similar to what you are reporting.

If you have access to another modem/router, you might want to swap it out and see it snything changes.

Hi Guys,

Thanks very much for that. In spite of my 100 years experience in IT&T I overlooked one of the most important checks. Yeesh!

I have a Thomson TG585 supplied by Telecom. I took it when they offered it free (about two months after I bought a new one) because theirs had wireless and mine didn't.

Now all I have to do is find where the heck I put the 'old' one. I will need to try it for a while because some of the time all is well then suddenly it all goes to h_ll.

At the moment I am very busy testing/assessing dual and tri-SIM phones I am considering importing and REALLY need to be able to use the web a lot to research the manufacturers so these problems are crippling me.

Anyway, I will feed back after I finish the TC trials.

Cheers,

David

Update on progress. Managed to make some time to get back to this problem a couple of days back.

Anyway, the first thing I discovered was I was wrong. I rechecked the Linux laptop and found that Firefox was running fine on it and the problem was only on the XP machines.

I couldn't find my old ADSL2 router so had to buy a new one. Installed it, only to find the two MS machines are still slow using any of the three browsers and that the laptop still runs normally. Today, I decided I was over Linux on the laptop so I blew it away and put XP back on.

Here's what happened. Installations were XP off CD and everything else, including the XP Service Packs and IE8, were off the household network.

Install...
> XP
> XP SP2
> XP SP3
> Google Chrome - Works great
> Zone Alarm
> AVG
> MS Office & FrontPage - Chrome still working great
> Uninstall IE, version whatever, and install IE 8
...Slow crawl immediately sets in on IE 8 and Google Chrome.

So, it has to be that IE 8 sets/resets something somewhere so I guess at least I have significantly narrowed down what to Google from here on. The alternative is to blow all three machines away and only load IE up to 7 and that is really not something I will enjoy.

Cheers.

David

By the way, uninstalling IE, with or without another version of it, has absolutely no impact. I tried that a couple of different ways before coming into this forum. Cheers, DG
