Hi there everyone

i'm looking at getting a nokia 5800 - just wanted to know if anyone tried this on XT and if so, how does it work, im really want to get this phone and noticed on the consumer website its Telecom XT compatible

is this true? im based in Wellington

Sorry the XT network in Wellington only supports AMPS the rest of New Zealand is WCDMA 850mhz

Have you looked around Geekzone at other posts about XT and the same question?

thanks for that so, if wgtn uses wgtn only uses AMPS< then the iphone 3g wouldnt work? right

ok, thank you so much, one more question sorry for my dumbness T_T - so techncally any phone that supports WCDMA 850 should work then, like N97 =)

If the device supports WCDMA 850mhz you should be good to go best operating freq for XT is 850/2100mhz WCDMA

But remember GSM is not WCDMA

If you haven't realised yet, Johnr was joking about AMPS.

The Telecom XT network is WCDMA 850 MHz. It's a pure 3G network. As noted GSM is not 3G. Don't buy Vodafone handsets expecting these to work on Telecom. They won't or if they do they perform poorly.

The exceptions are the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, which perform better on Telecom XT than Vodafone.

Ahh i c, thanks Freitasm, What if the phone was Unlocked? what are the chances of that? as i noticed there a few nokia 5800 saying it works other say its not, so im guess the phone is unlocked ?

i just want a good phone with XT thats got a good Music player aswell thats loud and i know nokias are the one.. i dont like the iphone ><

The phones are all already unlocked. This is not the problem. It's a radio problem... The handset works in one frequency, the network works in a different frequency.

Because in the major cities Telecom have some 2100MHz sites. This is the same frequency used by Vodafone for 3G coverage in the major cities.

Virtually every 3G phone picks up 2100MHz so the 5800 will pick up the XT network if it's in range of a 2100MHz XT site. The XT network however is 100% 850MHz with limited 2100MHz coverage - so while it may work if you're near a 2100 site the coverage is quite limited.

99% of the handsets sold by Vodafone will NOT work on XT.

It depends which version you have. If you have the American version (850/2100) then it should work well. If you have the other version (900/2100) then avoid it. The Vodafone NZ version is 900 (according to their website) so this would not work (well, it would sometimes but really not worth the hassle). You would have to source a 850 model.
